    Is anyone using this combination?

My front derailleur is on its last legs (thank you cyclocross) and I like the longer arm and looks of the 5800 series one. Will there be enough movement from a 5700 shifter to run a double?

I don't think so. A longer arm means more of a cable pull.

Yes, but currently (5700/5700) I have to stop the movement outward with the screw. If I undo it the FD goes further than necessary - maybe it will be just-about enough to operate the 5800 mech?

There is one short product review on the internet that says it works ok (evanscycles Q&A on the product).

Sounds like a stretch to me

At the end I have found an old and cheap Sora 8sp mech and it works better than the original 5600 :) No chain rub in any gear combination, as it is designed for slightly wider chain.
