DTC P1249 - Toyota 2.0 D4D

    Hi all,

    MIL popped on my dad's 2.0 D4D Corolla Verso.

    Plugged in the scan tool and the code that was shown was P1249 but there was no description about it.

    I couldn't find what it means on a Toyota but searching the code on Google yields results on American diesel truck from saying "Wastegate Fail Steady State Test"

    Any ideas? Does anyone have any Toyota code list to check?

    Wastegate Control Valve Performance.

    Check vacuum lines, solenoids going to turbo etc.

    1CD - FTV yes?

    Going to guess boost control solenoid, common failure on that vintage.

    Small piece, on a bracket with the egr solenoid (I think)

    Bought a Delphi scanner today. Turns out the cheap scanner was showing the wrong code. The Delphi showed P1251 - Turbo Regulator.

    Must be the solenoid so.

    Right so I pulled out the E-VRV (VACUUM REGULATING VALVE) today.

    Checked the continuity with an ohm meter as specified in the Toyota repair manuals. All the numbers are good, the only thing is it looks like one of the ports is snapped off.

    Here's a photo how a good one should look:

    As you see the little cup thing is missing. I am not sure if this would cause a P1251 appearing, however I was looking at a used replacement on eBay and it was also broken exactly like mine is :(

    Thats only a vent, no big deal and wont throw a code

    Do you know what the green thing is on the first picture that is connected to the hose?

    So it mustn't be the VRV then.

    According to the diagnostic section in the repair manual the EGR valve or vacuum hoses can also be culprits.

    I have cleaned out the EGR perhaps a year ago so I don't think it's that. :mad:

    Possible causes, Hose connections, hoses blocked/leaking, wiring, turbocharger (TC) vane position sensor, turbocharger, TC control module, ECM

    Cheers for the PM dieselbug.

    Since the solenoid was fine I checked up on the vane at the turbo and it felt a bit rough or rusty. Sprayed lots of WD40 on it and it became a bit smoother as I was moving it.

    Took the car out for a rag in 1st, 2nd and 3rd and it seems to be fine now _hopefully_. When I tried to get the MIL to turn on last night it happened instantly when I got into the high rev range.

    If it feels rough then the turbo needs dis-assembly and the vanes need decoking(oven cleaner works great :))

    What exactly do you mean by actuator, it will either be a straight in and out vacuum actuator or a rotating electric one you won't be able to turn by hand easily

    How can that piece feel stiff or rough? it moves in and out under vacuum, where did you oil exactly :D

    The actual metal stick that moves in and out was rough and was binding a bit when you push it in.

    Was it still connected to the vanes when you were trying to move it? Very little in there to become rough, its just a diaphragm really

    I'd hazard a guess it goes like a rocket around town and as soon as you hit the open road and the revs climb beyond 2000 rpm all power is suddenly lost. Typical turbo vanes sticking in the maximum boost position. The downside of using a diesel to go for the paper!!!

    It was running great but it was going into limp mode because of overboost.

    Haven't had any issues since though (let's hope it stays this way).

    10 out of 10 for optimism... I can't see a few sprays of WD40 lasting very long. Your fault is the exact reason I went back to petrol.

    Sure I can't see anything else being wrong.

    The e-VRV is fine after testing, MAF sensor is grand, vacuum hoses are fine.

    We'll see how it goes anyway :pac: Not a big fan of diesel myself. It's the auld lad's car.

    EDIT: Funnily enough some guy on a German Avensis forum had the same issue and he said he fixed it by "100 strokes of the VNT actuator". Precisely what I did plus some WD40 :D
