I've got a front lower tooth that's fucked. Never had a root canal. Can any one weigh in on if it's worth it? Will I need a crown? I'm apprehensive about having a missing front tooth, being unattractive enough, but if a root canal will end up being extra hassle down the line, I'm not sure I can put up with that either.

If it is really ****ed and will cause problems longer term then get an implant.

    Probably saving money long term.
Price the implant in Poland or Hungary. Way cheaper.

I've had a couple of root canal fillings a few years ago and have not had any problems. After a while you forget it's a crown. Lately I've been seeing a lot of stuff online saying that root canal fillings are bad because it keeps a dead tooth in your mouth. Had I read that before I had mine it would have put me off.

OP its a simple choice really. Keeping the tooth is always the best option. If that required a root canal then thats what you need to do. Its painless and works very well if done correctly. If not the tooth will need to be removed and you will have to have a gap, get a denture, or a bridge or implant.

Dont listen to the tinfoil hat type online that think root canals cause health issues. Teeth have been root canaled for 100 years and people have never been healthier.

I am in a similar predicament, I went to the dentist last week thinking I needed a filling in my left rearmost upper molar.

Turns out after an X-Ray there was an infection so she put a temporary dressing on the tooth and gave me painkillers and antibiotics for the infection.

I was told the options were get it pulled or root canal treatment, I would like to keep the tooth if I can.

She also said there was a wisdom tooth growing into the back of this tooth, I'm not sure of the implications of this.

    ^^
Sometimes the upper 8 , your wisdom tooth , can fill the gap left behind as a result of extracting a second molar .

99% (in adults) of the time the wisdom tooth does not move into a favorable position. Much better have your second molar and no wisdom tooth.

What's the going rate for a root canal treatment with a specialist? My own dentist in south Dublin is quoting €900, with the specialist at their surgery. It's a huge amount of money - are there better value quality options? I contacted a few NI dentists, but didn't get very comforting responses in terms of their ability to get the thing done.

I'd be very interested to hear what others are paying for this. If you have specific recommendations for a specific surgery, please PM me.

Thanks for the update, not quite what I wanted to hear, obviously, but I appreciate the response.

    Other experiences most welcome...

A search is showing €350 - €500 as fairly ballpark.

Teeth have been root canaled for 100 years and people have never been healthier.
Oldest route canal dates back to 200 BC + we are actually living longer and sicker than ever.

you do realise that Meinig based his opinions on research done nearly 100 years ago?

this article (cant post links so you will have to copy and paste) does a decent job of countering Meinigs nonsense. endoruddle.com/blogs/show/18/quack-watch-keeping-your-patients-informed
