    Quote:

At the time I learned to drive (decades ago!) I was told that it was not a requirement to indicate when turning left, which is what the driver in this instance was doing.

Was my driving instructor in the wrong, or have I missed some legislation since?

Another thing my driving instructor advised was never to trust another driver's indicators, to wait until his or her intention is clear.

I don't see any mention of a cyclist in the thread you linked.

No but I thought many in the cyclist community would be interested in the argument in the thread in general and in the notion that you don't need to indicate to turn left.

    I'm flabbergasted!

When I took lessons in the uk for my test, I was always instructed "turning left or right you must indicate". The only time you didn't need to indicate on a roundabout was if you were going straight through. On a larger roundabout, indicate just before you exit.

I was having this conversation over the weekend with family about roundabouts here - very few people use them properly. Indicators are used inappropriately all the time - people indicate left when theyre going straight through, or right then left.

My instructor in the uk told me to always trust people on roundabouts - thankfully I ignored his advice, and would have gone under a car on Friday evening coming from work had I heded his advice. I was turning right At a mini roundabout going into the road leading to my house. A car coming against me slowed down - I assumes she'd seen me with a bright front light and arm out indicting right - she speed up through the roundabout, forcing me to brake hard to avoid her. This kind of thing happens all the time

I'm not a cyclist and came by this thread through the frontpage but I can tell you one thing.
The motor forum is full of people enthusiastic about cars and driving but it's also full of sh1t. At any given time you will have a couple of threads going were some people are defending the indefensible.

Using or not using lights. Crap tyres. No insurance. No nct. No indicating. Slow drivers. Breaking red lights. Cyclists. Permits. And so on and on...
The subjects are manifold and without fail some guys will come out and say that x, y, z or the other doesn't apply to them cos they know better, it's a money racket, that's for bad drivers only, it's clearly stupid, my daddy said etcpp.

Only the other day people were openly admitting to and defending breaking red lights. And they felt alright about it because of people slow off the mark and in any case there are a few second leeway bladibla ..

It's quite scary really cos all these people are allowed to drive big dangerous cars and they're out there.

Fair play to ye cyclists. I've been driving in a number of different places. I would only cycle from one Irish town to another if I had a death wish.

I don't know about Ireland, but it isn't a requirement in the UK. Something about their use not being manditory in the highway code.

Did my test 14 years ago.

Never have I ever heard that's there was no requirement to indicate EVER, ANYWHERE.

Even on a small roundabout going straight through you indicate left after the first exit.

Also I would agree with the sentiment that you never trust another driver's indicator, always wait until the manoeuver begins.

Had an interesting debate about drink driving on the motoring forum - one poster, a regular, debateds with me endlessly the benefits of a few pints. The amount of thanks he got on his original post was worrying. I assumed he was trolling - nope - looked over his previous posts and he was a big fan of it.

I probably shouldn't be quoting myself, but anyhow... Did a quick google and in the UK it isn't a requirement because it isn't law, only a reference in the highway code to their use.

Don't start a thread here to talk about what's being discussed elsewhere on the site - use that thread
