Is it wise to do all 12 lessons in a short space of time, then do the test?

Ideally I would like the licence sorted ASAP but at the same time, I don't want to fail first time.

Depends on how much practice driving you'll be able to do, in between lessons.

I'm not a beginner driver by any means. My biggest difficulties are that I lack both confidence and experience of driving in urban areas.

Sounds like you need more practice driving. That is the best way to acquire confidence and experience of driving in an urban environment. Doing lessons can only teach you so much.

I did one per week - just bear in mind if your first learners permit was after April 2011 you will need to wait 6 months before you can book your test anyways.

Best bet is to work through them with an instructor and they will let you know when you're ready for the test - make sure you do lots of practice tests with your instructor as well. No point spending €85 for the test (+rental if you use the instructors car) if you aren't ready.
