As said I just upgraded the operating system.

Phone reset and turned on, turned the screen off and put it down. Tried turning the screen on and nothing.
Now it won't even power on.

    Any ideas??

Take out the battery for a few minutes.... Then put it in back in.
Or leave it naturally die and then restart it.
Sounds like it fell over trying to run a particular program on reboot.
By taking out battery, and then putting back in, it should free the RAM.

    I'm guessing:(
Take out any sd cards, or remove the phone from its case if its in one, then try and reboot.

Worst comes to the worst, you might have to connect to Odin and reflash.... but i'm sure there is something very very simple about this problem....its nothing serious.

Is it utterly dead, no signs of life?

Nothing. No power lights, nothing when I plug it in, tried a few different batteries. It's currently an expensive coffee coaster

Nothing registers when you plug it into your pc? does device manager detect it?

If you haven't already, try booting into recovery mode or download mode.

    that is insane

At least for some people it was just a case of removing the sd card
    http://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-note/267426-galaxy-note-suddenly-shut-off-won-t-turn.html
As strange as that sounds, that sd card issue makes sense. It happens with a Windows pc or linux pc that if you have another drive (sd card/external haard drive) the computer tries to boot first from the external memory before its own hard drive. Certain file types on the external memory can cause it to hang.

But in the OP's case, he has already checked the sd card which means, yes, you're right, Sudden Death Syndrome. I'm shocked that Sammy would know about this and not notify(warn) its customers, they could lose very valuable documents/photos on the device if they didn't have it backed up. If they were warned they could at least back up their information.

To borrow a phrase from Martin Callinan, it's disgusting.

Quick update. Dropped it to gsm solutions. Said the phone was a goner, emmc chip???? And they couldn't fix it. Rang samsung, they sent a courier the next day,( yesterday) said they'll fix it or replace it.

No prompting or demanding, all offered to me instantly without question. Hopefully it's not too good to be true!

The only response I got was their Facebook page!

Send a private message to them and they'll chase you up then.
