Dublin to New York/Boston - Business Class

    Hey All,

As the title suggests looking to see what the best carrier is for going Dublin to New York/Boston by Business Class, looking to fly into one of them and fly out of the other.

From reading many posts i see that AL business class was behind it's rivals but now that is being upgraded.

Does the upgrade bring them to par, or are other airlines better value for money when it comes to Business class.

    Thanks

I think EI are on par with the American competitors on the routes, you could always try two different carries if you are curious, but the flights a relatively BOS- Ireland being sometimes only a short 5 hours!

    Delta and Aer Lingus.

Would fly out with Delta and back with Aer Lingus. Unless your going from early/mid June to September all carriers will be narrow bodies apart from Aer Lingus. Don't use the 07.50 departure with EI though.

The existing Aer Lingus business cabin doesn't have lie-flat beds. The new cabin will have lie-flat plus in- seat massagers!

    Business class includes free wifi.

0750 departure is to JFK, OP wants to go to BOS.

I would concur with the stick to widebody advice.

EI will have full flat beds throughout their A330 fleet by end of March apparently.
B757 is a older angled flat seat.

757 would be ok for a day flight IMO. 330 with flat seats would be better for night time though.

Just one thing that may not be very obvious - buying two one way business fares can be much more expensive than a return fare. The one way fare is usually significantly more than half of the round trip fare, and hence this routing may be much more expensive than a return on one carrier/alliance. It is usually less of an issue with economy fares

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but what do you mean by narrow bodies? does this mean it's a smaller plane?

Why wouldn't you depart at 7:50?

I have notice this, so ended up trying to book through the multi city option - it's working out about the same, about 1900 return for flying to NY and back from Boston, 1800 to/from NY.

Is there any time of the year that flights would be cheaper than other months?

If i use google search i can see that for the dates i was looking - July/August, i can get return to NY on business with United Airless for just about 1k. Why is there such a difference between them and say AL which is about 1800?

Narrow body means a single isle aircraft, namely a 757 on this route. I think it's universally accepted that it's not as comfortable a trip, and the business class is kind of shoehorned in there as opposed to designed to be there, as is the case on the wide bodies - the A330, 767 etc. as for not taking the early departure to NY, the comment was made as it's expected that that slot will be operated by a 757 narrow body. Having said that, I don't think it's set in stone, and depending on demand, there's no reason why we couldn't see it operated by an A330.

And the comment about the 07:50 Aer Lingus service refers to the fact that it will be a Boeing 757 rather than an Airbus A330.

July/August are the busiest months for air travel so prices are higher.

Best time to travel would be mid Jan -mid Feb. Its the post holiday slump in loadfactor, so not all the cheaper tickets will have been taken.

As for different airliens with different prices....its depends on demand. Perhaps United aren't as booked up as EI at this point. The cheaper tickets always get bought first.

There is certainly a huge difference between the 757 and A330 business class. Airbus feels natural while the Boeing feels like it was just dropped in there. No complaints though I when I do get to fly business class!!

The fares of about €1k were part of a sale with the Joint Venture on transatlantic routes (joint venture between AA/US/BA/IB/AY). This sale ended at midnight on 27/01/15. As far as I'm aware the sale was matched by star alliance carriers (one of which is United), but I believe this sale also ended yesterday. I haven't checked but I expect the cheapest fares available now would be more expensive than €1k

You'd often see great deals for Business fares during these holidays months as most of the traffic is bucket and spade. During August particularly, there may only be a small difference between an expensive economy fare and a cheap business one.

You won't get great deals on EI business fares. In my experience they are probably one of the most expensive. Recent example. Virgin upper to MCO €1500. EI was €2800. That's a lot more for the convienence of flying direct

By the way, any talking about the comfort levels of an A330 and a 757 on a TA flight has never really used the service before. Uniteds 757 service to EWR is brilliant. 16 seats 2 x 2 in business guarantees a great service. I have United Gold and it is my preferred way to travel. Just the virgin flight was cheaper this time.

Bucket and spade routes such as MCO have slightly different dynamics. NYC can see some great bargains in business over the summer.

That's about what I was thinking, thanks Roundymac.

At the same time of year you can often IT rates of €999 if you book your hotel at the same time so €1350 could get you return in business with a decent 4 or 5 star hotel for a few nights.
