Hi I received this email after asking for further information on a tractor for sale on Ebay, she has good ebay feedback but tractor very cheap...

what you think of this guys, i think its iffy but not 100 per cent sure

"I must tell you that the tractor belonged to my father who unfortunately passed away 3 months ago.The tractor is now in my name. I do not live in Aberdeen,I live in Greece so I can't go there every time someone wants to see it, plus I can't go alone as I am a woman.I am out of the country most of the time and because of that i chose to handle the sale online through eBay. This way we can both be protected and insured. I will get somebody to bring it to you if you decide to buy it but we have to close the deal through eBay. An inspection period prior buying it along with a refund policy will be included in the sale terms. My friend is not in Aberdeen and will be traveling from a distance so I must be sure and not put him on the road based on words, no one would, because I have no one in Aberdeen. You will receive the tractor in 3-4 days and you will have the chance to inspect it for 5 days. The tractor will be delivered directly to your requested address as soon as I will have the payment confirmation from eBay. Also you will have to put your decision there and whether it will be an " Yes. i keep the tractor" or " No, I want to return the tractor" (in case it isn't as i described it), eBay will either advance the funds to me or give you a refund and my friend will collect the tractor. If you want it, let me know your ebay user id along with a phone number and your name, address where it must be delivered so i can register the sale with ebay to proceed. If you will decide to not go through now then is not a problem I still quite have a few more offers from potential buyers. Hopefully,I made myself understood and we will be closing the deal.I look forward to hearing from you soon".

If you want to gamble, ebay generally always side with the buyer in any disputes as long as all correspondence and purchasing is through ebay/paypal. It might be worth a punt if you are buying a toaster, less so a tractor.

very interested in the tractor but Ebay only covers up to a certain amount, yes it does seem like a scam though

If you read the English in it it's not exactly perfect, it doesn't read like someone with English as their first language. From reading it I took it that she will give you the tractor for a few days then if you want it all well and good and if you don't just give it back?

    SCAM!!

Whilst searching tractors on donedeal. He didnt have paypal for ebay at the time.
Them scams are going around years OP. Always a sob story, death sickness etc, and plenty still fall for them. Google 419 scams. Its basically the same as the nigerian prince. Send them money to cover the bank costs (this case, shipping costs*) and they'll send you the 2million resting in their account, or in this case, a tractor.

*She'll tell you to pay shipping costs only, and if you like the tractor you can pay in full minus shipping costs. When the delivery dosnt arrive, you realise there is no tractor and she is long gone...

I have an early hotmail account and for some reason my address seems to be known to every scam artist in the crime underworld. I got some funny scam letters from Nigeria over the years.

How much money would you be saving compared to buying a tractor here in Ireland?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,280 ✭✭✭✭Nekarsulm

Not a lot! The money will vanish, the tractor will never appear and the advertiser will become uncontactable.

    Careful now ! ! !

That might be the most apt use for that particular phrase ! ! !

    Hi Chezzie,

I'm always wary of online stuff out of the blue. The stilted "Nigerian English" always starts a little bell off in my head.

Its interesting too that she asks for your Ebay ID rather than simply posting a link to the tractor.

If she really was in the predicament that she describes, the easiest course would be to sell the tractor to a local dealer.

So yes, run. I wouldn't reply to the e-mail and confirm its good andI wouldn't let them have my Ebay ID.

If the Euro vs Sterling goes haywire we won't be buying anything from the UK.

It's a complete scam. It's virtually the same as the car scams on AutoTrader. And that's been going for years.

I suppose there is always one who will fall for it.

    I wonder what would happen if you replied with;

What a coincidence! I happen to be going to Aberdeen this weekend. I can go look at the tractor for myself and drive it home on the ferry :D

You'll probably get no reply but you'll have let them know that the e-mail address is genuine/ live and that there's someone on the end that up for a punt, however cagey they are. You're best just to bin it.

This poor English is actually done on purpose so that not overly bright people may be attracted.

Why can't the guards latch on to this and reel them in, had something similar years ago and reported it, guards could tell me from IP address that they were based in Nigeria but did nothing only told me to ignore it

Guards not overly interested in lots of minor criminality here in Ireland. Never mind someone operating from abroad. Try reporting a stolen chainsaw or pressure washer, unless you take great care to push the issue, you will hardly even get a pulse number for the crime.
As it stands, no crime has been committed as yet, its just an "invitation to treat" same as me putting a sign at the end of the road saying "round bales, great price, bargain "
And there is also no defence in law for "making a bad deal"

    Buyer beware!

Came across a website one time that used to turn the scam back in the scammers. Www. 419 eater.com Basically they receive the email from the "Nigerian prince" return it saying that they would love to help them out but that they need a little favour in return and they used to get them doing mad ****e like transcribing the bible or the London A to Z . one guy got a perfect wood carving of a Commodore 64 keyboard. Ok it was taking advantage of poor people but those scammers are ruthless and these guys wasted their time at least.
