If it is not overfull with engine oil I think it needs a set of piston rings

Or liners. It would need to be a lot of oil at the top of the piston to get up the exhaust and not be burned off.

You could try heavier/thicker oil and see if that calms it down a bit

Have a problem with a 135 stuck in reverse gear, even though the 1-2-3-R lever is stuck in third. Seems a fairly common problem with them, after googling it. Thing is, after opening the oil filler cap beside the gear levers, not sure where to try to lever the cog wheels within, or in which direction. Any ideas?

you can go in through the filler cap for 3rd gear push the shift rail back with a bar,you might have to take the top off to get reverse out its the right hand shift rail 3rd is on the lefthand shift rail, can you take the gear lever off?sometimes that can work to unstick gears used as a lever. the end of the gear lever in the box might be worn too.

Valve guides and piston rings (oil ring) worn
To repair remove head send to engine engineering firm fit new valve guides, valves and reseat. Drop sump remove pistons depending on level of wear hone bores fit as a min new ring sets (or pistons and rings). Drive hard for a while after.

You can resleve engine with finished sleeves but the orininal are best.

She is probably burning a drop on oil as well but the shaft and oil pump are a bigger job and the crankshaft balancer in particular are expensive items.

I done the head and rings in a 178 and cut silage for years after

The 235 there is a small plate on the back of the gearbox with a small shaft that pervents two selector rails moving at the same time this is broken you should split behind gearbox to replace but a man that knows can take off the lift cover and reach forward.

    Hope this helpes

Engine in the old massey loader puts on the oil light if she is worked over half hour but she starts fine any cold morning and burns very little oil.is it the crankshaft needs grinding

Thanks for all advice. Not too mechanically minded, so may get someone who knows. First time it happened, so maybe not too much wrong yet.
