    Hi all,

So myself and the missus recently came home from abroad and need to get cars for work etc.

Me: Driving approx 50 km return to work motorway driving and few longer drives home so approx 18-20 km per year. I am looking to spend around €12 - 14k. I have been looking at 2011 Insignias online and like what I see.

Herself: Driving approx 70km return to work motorway driving and not too much else so again around the 18-20 km per year mark. She is looking to spend around €6-8k. I have been looking at ceeds, fiestas, golfs etc but not too much stands out.

We have no trade ins, I was thinking diesel for both but I am not sure about that either. Thanks

As your wife is driving longer motorway distances surely she'd be happier in the bigger car?

Anyway, I'd add to the list an Astra. If you arrive into a dealership and take one of each you may get a better deal especially as you have no trade in.

Other cars to consider would be a Seat Leon, Skoda Octavia, Mazda 3 and possibly a Nissan Juke or Qashqai (depending what you like).

You might also get a good price on a Renault Megane and Fluence but it really is a matter of personal taste so I'm just throwing a few suggestions your way.

What exactly do you like in a car and what do you want?

You might also want to consider a Mazda 6 2.2D also. Lovely cars IMHO.

Hi Ba, cheers I forgot to mention Astra. If possible we would get both in the same place and look for bigger discount.

And yes she could use the bigger car but essentially I will be buying it. We're not too fussy car wise, will mainly be looking at cost, so fuel efficiency and reliability (and maybe tax).

I was never really pro skoda myself but when I was looking lately a lot of people were pushing them , they have them , vey reliable, well built , economical, so I would say don't rule them out

If I were in your position, I'd pick up a 2010 Skoda Superb TDI for myself and a 2007 VW Golf TDI for herself. Neither are anything special but both will be cheap to run and reliable.

You need to first find one that isn't rattling its chain off. And good luck with that.

They aren't particularly nice to drive either, imo.

    Thank you for the reply.

Just looking for 1.4 petrol around 06,07.

So hard to find a decent second hand car these days.

    Thank again.

For your wife for 6-8k you would get a decent mk5 golf around 2007. They are a comfortable safe car to be in ideal for the 70km commute. If you could get a comfortline or higher spec they have upgraded seats (I have one with these seats) even after 2-3 hours drive they are comfortable. 1.7 cdti astra could be an option either the 1.3 cdti is a bit on the slow side.

For yourself Id say drive a few insignias and then the likes of a superb, passat etc to compare it too and see what you prefer.

How about a Ford Focus? Very popular car and plenty available.I wrote off my Audi A3 recently and had a Focus on my shortlist as a replacement ended up going same again.Make sure you use a mechanic to check over any potential purchase, money well spent IMO
