05 Focus battery problems?

Hi. I have a 05 Ford focus 1.8 TDCI. When I start it in the morning, it will struggle to start after 1st heating. The headlights will also be flashing as it starts. I had a problem with the alternator a couple of weeks ago. It had not been run for a few weeks over Christmas so I tried to start it and it would not start. I hooked jump leads and it started first time. The alternator gave up the ghost the next morning and has been replaced.
It is still having trouble starting so I checked the voltage on the battery this evening and it is reading 16-17V. i would have expected it to be about 13 or 14V. Does this indicate a problem with the battery??

Could be or it could be a smart charge issue. you need to get the battery tested and take it from there.
If that car is charging at 16/17 volts all the time chances are the battery will explode and that leaves some mess you dont want that.

Are you sure your meter is accurate? If it is either the alternator regulator is faulty or the engine to body earth strap is corroded/missing.

The Ford smart charge system can produce voltages up to 18v which is why they use a silver calcium battery. A normal battery is not designed to be exposed to this type of voltage.

Also the reason why jump leads are not advised. The donor car can be exposed to these voltages on start up.

I would be getting my battery checked.
