Somebody might look at them when you pass away but otherwise I don't see the point.

To keep them safe. If you lose your phone or your laptop is stolen or destroyed you could lose all your photos.

This is why I always recommend that people get into the habit of making regular backups of their data on removable media. Too many people rely on cloud technology as all their prayers answered so to speak, and ignoring the glaringly obvious security issues, there's every opportunity for their chosen service provider to either close down the service with insufficient notice, or by the time you have gigs of data on their servers (terabytes in the case of SMBs), they may change their terms and conditions and you may find yourself over a barrel in terms of agreeing to the new conditions or moving your data off their servers.

I'd always encourage people to keep as much control over their data as possible. Cloud services are alright for some things, but I have data on modern terabyte hard drives that was originally stored on floppy disc!

I wonder how many people realise their dodgey pics are also backed up to their cloud service.

"Send this random girl a dìck pic"

    two months later...

"Yeah honey... Our daughters first birthday pics are backed up. Here is my details..."

Yup but being a paranoid oldie, I like having them backed up on a physical drive as well

All phones and pc photos are backup on Skydrive. Skydrive is regularly backed up to a portable HDD.
If you are at all bothered about your photos etc, keep them on at least 2 back ups, one local and one cloud.

No, I'd be afraid it would get hacked and people would see my nude pics. I prefer to use removable media with encryption.

My phone was backing stuff up on Dropbox and Google automatically, but I ran out of space quickly enough, which I knew would happen. Don't really like the idea of it being in the cloud, but I can't find the mains plug for my removable hard drive (it's a big old yolk).
Paying for the space just seems like a big ask, with all the other stuff you have to pay for.

The cloud makes an excellent backup service. I very much doubt the likes of Microsoft or google will be going back on their commitment to cloud services. So I don't think there's any worry of them deciding to just dump the service or do any major changes to the terms and conditions.

But the cloud is good as part of a backup scheme. Local backups allow instantaneous recovery of lost data but isn't secure in the sense it's probably in the same room or house as the original data so a house fire would wipe out both. Cloud is as secure as anything else on the net and it's maintenance is the concern of some college educated smart people. It's slow but works anywhere, there are huge benefits.

I have 3 back ups of my data. (yes, i'm THAT guy! :))

    Mainly Pictures and Music.
Since i got my first digital camera in 2007, ive kept everything nice and ordered. i do a full backup between 2 PC's monthly and also have a Portable USB HD that i back up too.

(I work in IT, so it wouldn't do for me to lose all my data... ) :p

i suppose no one prints pictures anymore, so in ten years time, if the kids want to see who was at their 1st birthday party, it will be there for them to browse.

google plus, gives you 15GB free drive space, could be handy for users who want to back up some photos.....

10,000 years from now: archaeologists at an historic moment in our understanding of our past.

    Reporter in crowd:
"The dawn of the 21st century was the dawn of a new age for mankind, would I be correct in that these rumours have now in fact proven to be true?"

    Panel:
"Well... we're not quite sure to be honest..... we did find tonnes and tonnes of really really small black boxes, we can deduce that this was a deity of some kind, but not much else"

I keep all my photos backed up to 2 different external hard drive and 2 different cloud services.

I have looked through my catalog of photos which have come from numerous different smartphones and digital cameras exactly zero times.

There's an idea, USB underpants. Get down to the Dragon's Den with that. :)

Anyway, I have 3 different backups, 1 drive at home, 1 in the car and dropbox.

Burned to DVD, and saved to external drives. No cloud backups yet, other than for docs I work on in multiple places.
