New install of UPC 240mbs disappointing

    Hi
I got this installed two days ago to replace eircom standard. While the speed tests show 160 wired and 50 over wifi it seems much slower than eircom for the physical loading of web pages.
I got the ubee EVW3226 router and the wlan light flashes continually. My iphone wont even load google via wifi. My sky hd downloads at a similar rate to eircom at its worst, can only view a few minutes before hitting buffer..
I am not very tech savy but this seems wrong no big usage in the house, no games etc. Normally just a laptop, phone the odd time and sky box. Connected sky box via ethernet cable to increase speeds but its not connecting yet and support pages for sky wont load
So anyone any ideas as to what I need to do? Expected to be blown away by this compared to eircom but so far very disappointed.
    Any opinions appreciated

Probably due to the poor wifi performance of the UPC router verus Eircoms router.

Please read this guide for more details:

    Thanks for the reply,
Am I looking at having to spend €100 approx to get a router to provide what I am paying upc to provide?
My laptop is 6 feet from the router
Have a 14 day cancellation window should I consider eircom fibre?
I got upc as they had a reputation of great bb if not customer service
    Very disappointing

The default wifi performance of the UPC device won't max out the 240 connection. The same thing would happen if Eircom suddenly offered 240Mbps speeds but left you with the same device. Get a nice AC router/access point with gigabit ports) (no providers in Ireland offer AC devices yet) and you will see the speed increase over wifi. Just bypass the UPC device for wireless entirely.

Of course, there could be other issues like spectrum congestion, bad line quality, etc. UPC 240 is the fastest home broadband in Ireland. Going back to Eircom isn't going to change this. Your wifi speeds have nothing to do with your provider.

    That is certainly an option.

However consider that Eircom is about €10 per month more expensive while offering far less (less then half the broadband speed and no free mobile calls). That €100 router will be paid for after just 10 months with UPC, after which you will be saving money, have a superior service and a fantastic high end router, far better and more future proof then anything supplied by any ISP in Ireland.

Also you don't have to spend €100, plenty of €40 to €50 models that will greatly improve wifi performance too, just less future proof and slightly less performance.

Don't get me wrong, I totally agree that it is stupid that UPC supply such bad customer equipment. It would be far better if they used the router that their partner Virgin Media does in the UK, a very good, high performing model. But for the time being, these are your options and IMO sticking with UPC is the better option, but in the end it is up to you.
