Old Sony video tapes to transfer to digital

    I have old Sony video tapes with family videos that I can no longer play due to the video camera been busted,
    Can I view these on another format
    Also where could I transfer them onto digital eg external hard drive,disk,usb etc,

    What format are they in?
    Maybe borrow a compatible camera and record onto any dvd recorder and rhen archive to disc.
