Founder of Russian gay teen site convicted of 'propaganda'

    MOSCOW (AFP) -

A Russian court on Friday convicted a journalist who set up a website to support gay, lesbian and transgender teenagers under a controversial law banning "gay propaganda" aimed at minors.

The social networking site, called Children 404, is used by thousands of teenagers to post heart-rending accounts of realising they are gay and their experiences of coming out to family, friends and teachers.

The site's 26-year-old founder, Yelena Klimova, wrote on Facebook that a magistrate's court found her guilty of "propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations among minors", a law signed by President Vladimir Putin in 2013 despite opposition from rights activists and stars including Madonna.

"The verdict is a fine of 50,000 rubles ($783). We will appeal," Klimova said. While the verdict does not immediately lead to the site's closure, it makes this likely.

The case was heard in Klimova's home city of Nizhny Tagil in the Urals. It was launched after a complaint from Young Guard, the youth wing of ruling party United Russia to prosecutors and the media and mass communications watchdog.

This is the second case against her for exactly the same deed. The website was actually used to help teenagers with stuff like coming out to friends and family and dealing with the aftermath. Bit hypocritical of the Russians charging anyone because of "propaganda", but there we go.

It's almost like Russia doesn't like homosexuals or something.

Which is weird considering how arousing and homoerotic I find all those photographs of their president.

I'm awaiting the Putinbots' (or Christian fundamentalists') attempts of whataboutery.

A slight tangent but related to the struggle by homosexuals in Russia. I was reading and one of the TV music stations was on in the background giving some chart rundown. They came to "Take me to Church" by Hozier and the announcer said they were unable to play the video on a family-friendly program. Thought I was hearing things so I rewound. No, heard it right.

Ffs, they'll play Rihanna or Shakira wiggling their admittedly pert asses but won't play a video of 2 men kissing? Or is it the issue with the the violent treatment of the men? Admittedly it's not pleasant but I've seen worse in videos. At least it might start a healthy discussion in some houses.

    Rant over.
