We have recently bought a new smart TV after waiting ten years for our old CRT to politely die (which it didn't, I had to give it away!) But I'm somewhat bemused by our options.

We have been using SKY up until now and while its great we don't watch as much TV as we used to and most the channels we do watch as I understand it are available on freesat which we can get for free? We want to look at dropping sky (which has just gone up in price again! Basic package is costing us the guts of €350 per year and the remote is on the blink and the box is probably not going to last much longer either.) That's a lot for a tv which heavily features Cbeebies!

FREESAT - Does this use the same sky dish and LNB? If we run a sat cable direct to our TV will we receive all the freesat UK channels using the inbuilt sat HD tuner?

SOARSAT - Does this use a different satellite or LNB or both? still free though?

If we wanted we could get a new generic satellite box to record and watch like the sky box? Can you handle/combine both freesat and SOARSAT

SOARVIEW - The free digital service. We need an aerial for this? You get more channels through the aerial?

Internet - Netflix seems good, we have used this in the past but what other good internet services are there that are either free or provide an excellent range of shows for a paid subscription.

In particular we have an LG 47L580v so any tips on using time machine II and the best HDD source to use would be greatly appreciated.

Is the magic remote worth the money?

Any other tips and advice welcome.

Sorry to hijack your topic Lantus, but I'm also interested in this. I have a smart tv (Sony bravia kdl32w705b) and just have the basic Irish channels, didn't get the dish with all the channels, but great option if you can get it. I watch mainly Netflix and YouTube now.

Is there any other apps we should look out for for smarth tv's?

    What's a magic remote?

Edit: I know what a magic remote is now :) don't think I need one.

Yes, not all of Saorview is on Saorsat.

My set up UPC broadband & Phone. A point to note is that through this subscription you get 17 Analogue stations see link below.

You just need a spilter and coax cable into your tv from the upc point.

I have also recently set up a Manhattan HDR-S Freesat + box off a sky dish too. It give all functions of a sky box pause, rewind, series link and record on all the UK Freesat channels.

    http://www.freesat.co.uk/channels

It uses the sky dish and cables so inbuilt tuner on your TV is perfect.

I've a smart tv too which let's me stream to it and use online services like plex or netflix as I do most of tv watching online.

If you've a smart TV then you can use smart functions like screen mirror/chrome cast from smart phone/tablet play any content from them to your TV. i.e Showbox etc..

    Hope this helps :)
