Revenue overpayment

    Hi all,

I recently claimed some tax back on rent for 2014. As part of that they issued me a balancing statement. I noticed a payment in excess of €2k in my account from Revenue today! I just checked ROS and the balancing statement and apparently my new employer (since March) didn't register me as their employee with the Revenue. I contacted Revenue and gave them my company code and start date. They didn't say anything about me paying the money back. Will this be automatically deducted out of my tax credits this year or should I just pay it back in full? As far as I know, they only accept bank draft. I can't do online transfers which is annoying as I am working nowhere near a bank.

it will be deducted in time so the choice is yours. you can let them take it back through PAYE tax credit adjustment or pay it back yourself.

it takes a few years to correct through PAYE

It happened to me a few years ago. Revenue reduced my tax credits over 3 years until it was paid back.

They're reasonable people, and I have found very good to deal with.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting this, but are you certain you're not genuinely owed that money? Surely you were on emergency tax since March if the employer never registered you, so is this not the excess tax you've been paying returned to you?

This seems to be a fairly regular occurrence when changing jobs mid year. A similar thing happened to me a couple of years ago.

I only notice the error when I requested my balancing statement. It took revenue almost 12months follow up with me in writing. The default repayment option was to reduce my tax credit each year by €750. Also any other refunds I'm due will automatically be offset.
