Chances are your emissions will be all over the place with the sensor faulty.

You can chance it with nct if there are lights on the dash.

I have the light switched off but for the sake of it might get a sensor

I've had that code on my car for over a year(since I bought it) and it passed the nct recently.

Have a listen under the car to see if there's a hole in the exhaust, sometimes this can be the cause rather than the sensor itself. If there is could be patched up to pass.

Dont blame the sensor because you dont like what it's telling you.

Chances are it needs a new cat and the sensor is just reporting the condition it sees.

Better to spend the money on a bit of testing.

Imo send it for the nct. If it fails emissions miserably you need a new cat. If it doesn't disregard that code.

Is p0420 not catalyst efficiency below threshold. If so it could be the cat that's going.

It doesn't necessarily mean your emissions will be bad though.

I've had P0420 on my Puma for the better part of a year now; I replaced my NCT-failure CAT with an aftermarket (cheap) one 2 years ago, and it looks like it's 'used up'. I replaced the lambda (post cat O2) sensor, but it's not the sensor, its the CAT not impacting the exhaust gases enough.

My Ultragauge clears the Check Engine Light, which I'd say pops up about once a month. It got through the NCT with the issue (though not the light) last year, but only by the skin of its teeth (0.1ppm off) and I'll put it through this year, but I expect to have to bring it back with a shiny new Ford-OE spec cat a couple of weeks later.

If you can, borrow a known-good sensor, they're pricey enough if there's nothing wrong with yours.

I had that code on my previous avensis over 3 years and it passed 2 ncts without a bother,it seems that code is difficult to actually find the problem.
