    Hi,

I recently tore my ACL ligament. Not a complete tear, but hanging on by a few fibers. Doing rehab now for the next few months, hoping to get back to snowboarding next season, if I don't have to go for reconstruction surgery

Has anyone had a torn ACL and rehab or ACL reconstructive surgery and what your experience was like getting back into skiing/snowboarding.

Basically I'm just really worried I wont be able to snowboard again.
Doctors say it should be possible with proper training, but i just want to hear some success stories from others :D

    Thanks

sorry just wrote very up-lifting reply thinking acl was achilles (which I banjacksed). its your knee. I would follow physio instructions. find out if having the surgery now might lead to a better outcome.

When you say Doctor, do you mean a sports surgeon, or your GP? Presumably you're under the care of a knee specialist (if not, ask your GP for a referral- PM me if you'd like a recommendation). Every recovery is different, but as your docs have already said, no reason why you wouldn't be back on your board next season. Check out this link for some reassurance & recovery stories, and stay positive! Best of luck with the rehab :-)

    Hi Overflow,

I did my ACL a few years back, soccer not snow! I had the operation and have been boarding 3 times since.

Knee has been excellent. Stable and very little pain. I have adjusted my stance a bit (from slightly forward to more duck footed). I find this more comfortable now as the knee stays more in line but that is the only way it has impinged on my boarding.

    Hope this helps,

    P

    Cheers !

I have seen an orthopedic surgeon, and have had arthroscopic surgery to remove a blockage in my knee and to have a closer look at my ACL. He said he hopes with with training I should be able to get back to normal function. He refereed me to a physiotherapist, which i started with yesterday.

The surgeon reckons its a 50/50 chance that I need reconstruction surgery after the physio and the physiotherapist didn't seem to positive about the training after i told them the kind of sports i was into.

What I'm not sure about is if the physio treatment usually works well for people who do a lot of winter sports. Or if surgery to graft my ACL back onto my femur is the better option. I guess ill find out in 4 months, just wondering if i should push for the surgery?

Thanks for the link ! :)

Yeah I believe snowboarding is easier on the knee's.

I cross country ski too, but that should be grand, just a walk in the forest with ski's on :D

I was playing soccer after 10 months. It was a couple of years before I was back on the slopes again but the delay was nothing to do with my knee.

I would recommend (if you haven't already) speaking to your surgeon, explain to him that boarding is a big part of your life and discuss your options with that in mind. A big part of the decision on whether to get surgery or no is what the patient will require from their knee in the future. My man was appreciative of the fact that I wanted to play sport for as long as I could and he outlined my options based on that.
