Triton T90XR - Repair or replace?

    Hi all,

Have always gotten great help here over the years with any questions I've had so hope you can help me again!

I've got a Triton T90XR electric shower in my ensuite. A few months back, it started to run quite loud. I did a bit of research myself and ruled a few things out by first disconnecting the shower head from the hose, then the entire hose form the base of the unit. Neither of these things made any difference, meaning the problem is obviously internal to the unit.

At this point, with it being electricity and water, I put a call into Maynooth Shower Maintenance who were on the sticker on the shower. An appointment never ended up being made with them and a month or two has passed since so I figured I should do something about it again.

This time, I thought I'd try you fine folk first. Is there anything obvious that it could be? It sounds like a motor/pump having to work very hard but I could be wrong. There's hardly an obstruction that it's struggling to overcome or anything like that?

If there's nothing I can do myself, the question then becomes whether I'm better off attempting to get it repaired or replace it altogether. It's just over 5 years old at this point and is pretty much used twice a day every day.

In either instance, is it a plumber or an electrician (or both?) that repair/replace these?

Really appreciate any and all help.

    Thanks,
    nkay.

I actually had a sentence in here saying could it be bearings in the motor/pump that are gone but then thought "you really don't know enough about any of this to be throwing these terms around" but with a bit more reading, I have a feeling this is exactly what it might be. Anyone think the same/different?

If it is, does the whole assembly need to be replaced? Again the cost of this versus a new unit question would come up.

The only moving part in the shower is the motor so nothing else can make a noise as such. It's sold all in one fitting. You can not get parts to repair the motor. A new motor is around €85 or €150 supplied & fitted

Thanks for that. Would there be €65 labour for fitting it, yeah? On that topic, would it be a plumber or an electrician who would do it?

If you are in Dublin just Google electric shower repair. Any propper shower repair company will have the part with them & you should be able to get it done today or Saturday.
If you are outside Dublin it could be more difficult. Most electricians & most plumbers don't repair electric showers. So you'd have to ring around

once the plumbing and electrics are in place, replacing an electric shower is pretty simple, personally I wouldn't pay to have it fitted

That's to fully replace a shower though, I guess, rather than replace a part like the pump?

Got quoted €80 for the pump and €70 for the call out from Earthridge. €150 feels steep to me!

Sorry, I didn't mean it in that way. Just thinking to myself €150 to repair something that's still working, albeit quite noisily. And then comparing it to the cost of a fully new shower.

I get ya. that's why I said roughly how much a new shower would cost. My rule of thumb for electric shower repair is if it's 5years or older 120 Euro should be the maximum for repair if the replacement is around 300 supplied and fitted. the problem is not everyone has the crash for a new shower. You can only do as much as your money allows you to.

I see Woodie's have the 8.5Kw T90Z on offer at the moment.

Does this look like a good price? As in would you really pay €250 for one normally? If so, I might well pick one up and have it there for when the current one packs it in.

Great, I'm sure I can find €209 somewhere to get this while the offer lasts. Thanks.
