2fm & Thompson Holiday a day competition

Hi I'm just wondering if someone could please explain to me how this works.

2fm‬ are advertising that the holidays in this competition are roughly worth €35000.

At a rough guess I would say that 2fm has an average daily listenership of 700000 between all their shows.
If only 10% of those listeners decided to enter the competition for €1 per entry that adds up to €70000 per day and seeing that the competition is running for 29 days that comes to €2030000. So if I minus the original cost of the holidays ie €35000 that leaves me with a balance of €1995000. So my question is, where is this revenue going?

2FMs reach is under 400k (according to ilevel.ie). Far less than 10% of the listeners will enter. Try 1%. Or less. Even fewer will enter daily.

23% of the €1 goes to Revenue in VAT
A large % goes to the phone operators

2FM aren't going to be paying full price - if at all more likely - for the holidays anyway, Thomson are advertising.

I wondered, what about those who enter the competition with the name wrong?

THe competition is to text Thomson with your answer and name to whatever the numbre is.

But I'd suspect many will spell it Thompson, do they lose out and only ones that start Thomson get recognised and put forward? eg. Thompson Answer Name

Depends on the texting software used, they either go nowhere and get charged; or they may match - they may have allowed Thompson, they may have it just to match on Thom*, and so on.

10% of the listeners - are you completely mad? I listen to 2FM most afternoons and have never entered one of those competitions. The reason is simple and is the same reason why I don't enter the Lotto or gamble on horses - the odds are crap.

I absolutely detest Irish radio's obsession with competitions.

I was only making a quick estimation based on the last jnlr ratings ie breakfast republic 100000, Tubs 150000, Nicky Byrne 200000, Rick O'Shea 150000 and Colm Hayes 150000. And I wasn't even taking into account the evening shows where it is also plugged to death.
I disagree with your 1% figure even though 10% is probably a little high.
But if Thomson are donating the prize for advertising and if 2fm are going to have that little of a response then why use the premium number?
    Why not use the 51552?
It's costing them nothing so why are they trying to make a profit from it?
It also drives me silly when Will Leahy gives away the Apple bundle which was obviously donated by Apple and uses the premium number and then uses the old "remember the stand alone number people, oh look I've just received ten texts already to the wrong number"

Those people are the same people, by and large. The total reach is in the JNLR figures too.

I'd be willing to lay money on the 1% figure - and far less than that by the end of the month. If it was 10% they'd be profitable without ads...

Stations do promotions to make money - pure and simple. Its an extremely rare day that giving something away costs a station money.

I'm not suggesting that it should cost them money but why use the premium number?
And on that note why do most national stations chose to use a 57*** number which isn't included in anyone's free text quota's?
Is it purely because of traffic or are they profiting from those numbers also?

Because it makes them more money.

A pittance, but yes. In some cases (rural stations etc) the pittance might not even cover the rental of the number.

Ronan Collins uses 57111 as well for competitions, it's clearly a money maker.
