    Hi
I have a gas fire and the chimney is blocked so i go a chimney brush and stuck it up and cleared a load of rubbish out there were birds nesting in it but the problem is that there seems to be a step in the flue up near the top. Is this normal or may it still be blocked and there is no step i also stuck it down from the top
Are there any ways to tell if it cleared.

Have you tried to push the chimney rods up on their own without the brush attachment? You should be able to wiggle them around to get them out the top (or vice versa from the top down). Careful on the roof if you are doing it top down.

While you have ladders etc. up consider fitting a cowl with bird guard - available at any good hardware store. Measure the overall diameter of the flue to ensure that you get the right one, it only takes a few minutes to fit.

Some chimneys have a double 45 degree bends. That can easily block.
It should be easier to get rods up with brush than without, keep turning rods clockwise so they keep attached !!
Or try a smaller brush first.

    Don't take a chance.

Don't light fire till its 100% clear.

Call a chimney sweep, they have better tools and experence.
