'No NCT' was introduced as a penalty point offence last year, previously it was a mandatory court appearance and 5 points if convicted.
If you accept a FPN within 28 days you'll get 3 points and €60 fine or €90 after 28 days. If you refuse the FPN and are convicted in court you get 5 points or no points if not convicted.

Whether a Garda choses to charge you or let you go is up to him, however some people feel that the lesser penalty might make Gardaí less likely to let you off. A booking confirmation does not entitle you drive without an NCT but it might persuade a Garda to use discretion if have one.

Keep trying the NCT website for an earlier appointment, if worried, usually find one if you try either late at night about 12am or early morning about 8am

Ring them, they have to get you an appointment within four weeks, it's in their charter, otherwise your test is free. They will find you a slot I almost guarantee it but you need to phone them

    Don't buy into the hysteria,
I rang when nct was due + got test within week

I heard a discussion about this on the radio a while back. The person who was being interviewed (not a guard) said that if you had evidence of a booking the Garda would take a common sense approach - I interpreted this as meaning no fine/points.

She also said that people should check with NCT website/phone ;line regularly because previously booked slots are always becoming available as people cancel.

Another angle....I had a silly fender bender last week and it has to go through insurance as I hit a taxi and want it closed out formally.

One of the first questions the Insurance lady asked me was did I have a valid NCT ? My car is 11D so it is not required yet but she was going through her checklist and it seems to be a possible insurance 'get out' if you have a problem in the intervening period.

She specifically asked 'do you have a valid NCT certificate ?"

If your car was registered in January 2011 then it is due an NCT, at 4 years old the first NCT is due.

I didn't say January 2011... my first registration date is February 28 2011 so I am not required to have a valid NCT until Mar 1 2014. I could be Dec 31 2011 and still have almost a year to run without an NCT requirement. The requirement is from the date of registration ..not the year.

Just for info my NCT appointment is actually Mar 3 so I am will be in the same bind for those intervening days.

It's not a "possible" insurance get out, it IS an insurance get out. Insurance companies will use any possible way to get out of paying out.

If its not due one though, they can't really do you. Book one for end of Feb anyway so you'll have something to show should they try that sh1te on you. If they do try it, point out the facts to them and get a solicitor if they don't back down ( preferably one who's hungry, they're the type that will fight for every last cent )

Insurance companies will do anything and I mean anything to get out of a payout.. I know, they're still messing me a round on a claim that happened in Aug 2013!!!

Don't. Phone, that's the best way to get an earlier test.

If you accept a date on the website that is past four weeks then they won't honour the free test. You have to ring up and demand it.

It has been all over the radio and on the website - if you can't get an online appointment before you are due, ring them up

Ring them, simples. I had an issue with the date rapidly approaching and all that. They got me booked in no trouble and even go the retest done in time.

I think the free test only applies if you haven't accepted a booking time already so may not apply to OP. Still he should ring them daily until until they can bring his date forward.

I booked a test for my wife's car last week. I checked on Monday evening and there was nothing anywhere in the country until April, checked again Tuesday, still nothing. Just after lunch on Tuesday I got a booking for Jan 28 in Fonthill which is my nearest centre.

To be fair though there's not a chance that old three wheeler is getting through the NCT.

I'm not singling you out, it just happens that skimming this thread, this caught my eye. May have been the capital letters. Who knows?

Anyway, I'm just going to generally put it out there that if your insurers refuse to indemnify you or pay a claim for any reason, you go straight to a solicitor. While there are certain things that will tend to invalidate your policy, such as driving drunk, a decent solicitor will advise you as to whether it's worth taking the matter to the court to decide.

The first person to mention the Financial Services Ombudsmen receives this week's booby prize (not as much fun as it sounds.)

Yep if you've accepted the later date the free test part is rendered null and you'll find it hard to apply pressure on them to get you a sooner date. I rang up last week as all the online appointments were in late april in my area (NCT is up end of Feb) and they've got me in on the 12th of Feb. Ringing is definitely the best option although the online service is handy if you need to schedule it a certain day. After lunchtime most days (Tuesdays especially) I used to check and they'd have released dates closer to now.
