If you can safely access the dish try aligning it with yourself at the dish and someone at the Sky box watching the meter on the box. Move the dish a fraction at a time until you get a good signal. It might only need a small bit of movement to get it back.

Well that will cost more than €20.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,905 ✭✭✭steveon

It would cost you €20 just to rent a ladder, any reasonable installer would sort it if its only an alignment problem for between €40-50 euro.

And trying to align a dish by hand is a stupid thing to do if you don't know what your doing as in many cases most people make the problem worse.

I have no doubt in my mind that somebody would do it for 40 or 50 euro but thats a big chunk of a pension wich they simply cant afford. I just tought id find someone kind enough on here to do a discount.

Nobody's going to turn up in a van with a ladder, tools and a meter and do it for 20 quid, get real.

How long is the dish up? Are you sure it's worth realigning? Are you sure it hasn't weakened with rust?

I know a guy would but I'm in Laois - it's only a few minutes work and €20 is all he'd charge.

Were in Dublin. Does he be out this way?

Id do it for 20 aswell if I was up that way and I would hazard a guess there is folks who would also do it for that again if they were in the area. I do understand and agree with what Stevon is saying about the price of 40 - 50e as if an installer has to travel specifically to that job then he would have to take into account, fuel, labour, time...etc.... and 20e would not cover that.

Oh I agree if they had to specifically turn up it wouldnt cover any of that, but if anyone is in The Dublin 24 area and can do this I would be very grateful

Are you sure about that? €50 is less than a tank of petrol these days.

I know because I am one. In the UK around £140 a week. I understood Ireland was more generous with cheap electricity as well.

Robbie just be careful anyone you get has public liability insurance . If they have an accident or damage your property you could be in a much worse state financially.

No need to be sorry Rob, just pointing out a possible pitfall, of course the decision is entirely yours if you want to take the chance.

I installed freeview in my parents house with little to no equipment. Have lined up plenty of satellite dishes for other people. I had an app on my phone but when I brought it close to the dish it interfered with the compass and rendered it useless.

I just had the spanner and someone looking at the signal strength and quality. Looking at my neighbours, I pointed it in the general direction and over the course of 20-30 minutes moved it fractionally, tightened the bolt, move, tighten. It is not as impossible as some people make it out to be.

On a side note, the dish in my parents was working flawlessly for 3 months until they got fed up with freeview and got sky installed. We took our dish down at that point.

im seriously thinking of trying it myself, as my dad who is in his 60s keeps saying he will hop up on the roof trough the attic window.

Mine has been blown around a bit lately as well - just make sure you have the right tools - a 10mm spanner is needed for a sky dish and possibly a screwdriver.

If you are not in line of sight to the TV, use a meter, or have someone on the end of a phone who can see it.

Use the diagnostics screen so you can see the strength and quality readings - depending on the device you may not hit 100% on each

Freeview is received via an aerial so that point is completely irreverent.

Except for the people who buy a TV with Freeview branding, & wonder why they can't get anything from their satellite dish.

You mentioned dishes so I definitely knew what you meant. Unfortunately the marketing guys who thought up these brand names did not have us in mind here in Ireland :)

If your confident access to the dish is safe you should try yourself. Bring a spanner and maybe some WD40 to loosen the bolts if the dish is up years. Try moving it to the left or right first, checking with someone on the ground if signal is improving.

This forum has become extremely confusing due to the misuse of terminology, and is now irrelevant as a source of information.

All this " I know what you mean" crap, better information is available down the pub.

Winston_1 - no need for any more spelling corrections, in this or any other thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,688 ✭✭✭winston_1

Surely this is the use of the wrong word, not a spelling mistake.
