Probably a stupid question but can you pay cash when you board a bus eireann bus or do you need a ticket bought in advance?

Also, if I buy a return ticket can I use it and then make the return journey 2 days later?

If you are at a bus station, you are better off getting a ticket there. Drivers do accept cash on board. There are different types of return, daily or monthly.
Monthly return would be probably the best one for you, month betwen outbound & return legs CH.

In Bus stations you might be told to use the ticket machines in the station, otherwise you pay the driver or buy online and show the driver your printout or the MAC number in the email.

You can buy a day return or an open return from the driver these are often the same price, but if you need to return the next day or later you should specify an open return as you wont be allowed travel on an expired day return.

Thanks, do you know if the monthly ticket costs much more than a regular return?

Usually no difference or very little to a daily return which out & back need to be done on same day.

Not sure where you are going to & from, but there might be private bus operators on the route also. Ones I know offhand are below
