Tax and illness benefit

    My partner has been off work for a number of months now meaning he wouldn't have earned enough in 2014 to pay tax but the first few months it was taken out of his wages. When he gets this yrs p60 at the end of the month it should reflect this.

    We don't expect a refund as he's on illness benefit so presumably it will go towards that (and fair enough) our question is is this done automatically or do we have to do anything. We don't want to fall foul of the taxman.

    He's most likely entitled to a refund of some amount. The whole amount of tax paid won't go toward tax due in IB, unless his wage was very small and benefit is very high.

    It won't happen automatically. When he gets the P60, ring up Revenue and ask for a balancing statement for 2014.

    Ok thank you we will call them. His benefit is the standard amount and he was on an average wage so assumed his tax would be towards but a bit back would be nice :-).

    So his P60 should show both what he earned this year, plus the amount of illness benefit and the total amount of tax deducted from both.

    Eh? I understand the P21 showing that, but how would the P60, which is issued by the employer get the benefit information?
