05 Focus pulley or cam belt?

2005 Ford focus 1.6 TDCI with 184000 miles. Constant strong humming noise in engine at 50mph and gets louder as car increases speed. Not noticeable prior to 45mph. No sign of noise when car is ticking over.

Mechanic thinks it's either the pulley or the cam belt. Claims the cam belt is a huge job to replace and is refusing to do it if that is the case.

Any ideas on what it could be?

Doesnt really sound like either to be honest if youre only getting a noise while driving.
Can you hear the noise if you rev the engine while stationry ??

If not i would guess its either a wheel bearing a driveshaft carrier bearing or a noise from the gearbox/diff.

Also timing belt is a very simple job on one of those so maybe a change of mechanic is called for 😊

my money is on a wheel bearing.

what sort of mechanic is turning down a belt on a 1.6 tdci Focus? Is he a bit of a chancer or does he not know what he's doing?
