I am really into films and recently I was thinking about starting up a club finding a venue for showing a movie/movies. There would be a cover fee at the door. I was looking to do it maybe once a month. It wouldn't be movies that are currently showing in cinemas. It would be classic movies or themed movies depending on the time of the year (X-mas etc.)

I was just wondering what the legalities are when it comes to showing a movie to an audience or if I was to start a club where a membership is paid monthly is there a difference.

In the most basic way possible; if you're showing the film in your home or the home of another member, then all is good.

If you're showing it anywhere else, you need a licence to do so as it's considered a public screening.

I also found this, but the site looks dodgy enough that I wouldn't be inclined to give them any money unless someone else confirmed they're the right people. http://www.mplc.ie/

The boards thread above gives some good details about places you could contact for info. You could also see if you could make contact with someone in the IFI, they'll know all this kind of thing.

You could show out of copyright movies no bother.
It's just knowing what's out of copyright that the ip lawyers make the big bucks on.

There is a good bit of complexity in relation to who owns what copyright and from when the clock starts in relation to film.
