Driving Trip - Suggestions for the Midlands

    Hi Folks,

Looking for suggest for a one day driving trip around the Midlands / West, starting in Dublin. I'm pretty familiar with the immediate Athlone / Galway area. Will be playing tour guide for the day and they are keen to see the 'middle' of Ireland, having seen huge amounts of the coast (Killarney / Galway / Tralee / Clifden etc)

Any suggestions beyond the obvious? The current list of 'maybes', garnered from the net, include:

    Belvedere House & Gardens
    Birr Castle
    Clonmacnoise
    Corlea Trackway
    Emo Court & Gardens
    Charleville Castle
    Tullynally Castle

Would prefer to avoid distilleries and the overly touristy places. Also, I'd appreciate feedback on the above.

    Cheers!
