    Hi everyone,

I have recently startied work at a small lab company thats quite a distance from home. While it has been great to get a job after college my first few weeks in the job have been anything but perfect. In fact its been down right terrible. I fee so bad about the place that I am considering handing in my notice but would like peoples views on the matter before I make my decision.

Before I started I had a number of issues with the place before I sat the interview.
    1) Location is far away from home meaning Id have to rent out a room and move away from home. This did not feel ideal following the death of a family member late last year as my preference was to be at home. Regardless, I do feel that I had to move on with my life.
    2) The company is located in a rural localtion with only a small number of small towns in the vicinity. As a young adult moving away from home I feel that a city would suit my needs better to settle in etc.
    3) The company is a small - family run business. No option for promotion however the pay is reasonable.

Since ive started however everything has gone wrong and I feel terrible down here. The house i am renting in is terrible, no heating, no broadband. As the location is more rural based there are practicaly no options at present for moving to another house. Work has not being going great either. I am already not getting on with a particular workmate and its not helping me settle. The work has being very unerwhelming at times also i.e. im giving a lot of washing up to do and jobs that others dont want to do.

The job is also stopping me from taking jobs that I want in locations Id prefer. Ive already turned down an interview for a company i would like to work for, so as not to upset my manager and to keep on their good side as I have just started. I feel I regret coming to this job in the first place given my original feelings and I was very close to not taking it.

If I hand in my notice will it affect me getting a job down the line. I have been told it will be recorded on my p45 which will record the fact that I was in a job for a short period of time.
I really dont know what to do. I know I dont want to be here but would hate to leave under these terms. I just feel so unsettled at this moment and I know by my frame of mind I wont settle now

Your P45 won't affect getting another job because you only hand in the P45 to them after accepting and starting the new job.
If it really is something you don't want a new employer to see you can always just get the new places details and then call the tax office and tell them to assign your tax credits to the company. That's all a P45 is for anyway.

If I were you, i'd start looking for jobs in locations and organisations that are more suitable to your needs. Is there any chance you can still get the interview you turned down?? I would not leave the current position until you have something else lined up though. If you're asked why you want to leave your cuttent position in interviewes give the location as the answer - want to be in a city-near family etc etc ... This will also be the reason you give to your current manager for leaving. As for the p45 issue, i wouldn't worry about it ... it only records your tax and earnings .. as it's a new year, you'll only have this years details on it regardless of how long you've been working there

    Good luck

If I had only been there a short time I would probably leave and then not bother to put it on my cv. Small gaps in the cv can be more easily explained by 'travel' and 'family' reasons.

If you don't have anything else lined up you may not get any Jobseeker's Allowance for up to 9 weeks so bear that in mind but I'd say you have a good reason for leaving as you're far from your family and unable to settle.

Life's too short. For some people having a job is the be all and end all but if you're single with no commitments take time to find something you're happy with. If you're recently bereaved you know that life can be short so make the most of it. Something will come up for you soon.

A new job might not be any better. As the most junior member of staff you always get the worst jobs to do so that should not be a consideration for you.
Move house to something that is suitable. There are plenty of houses available especially in rural areas as they are so hard to find tenant.
