Puraflo Peat Filter System

Hi everyone, I'm a new member to boards.ie as I'm building a house in Galway and I've got 101 questions I've been following lots of the treads. My house was constructed in 2008 up to the outside shell to meet the planning permission. I'm now trying to finish the interior i.e. wiring, heating, plastering insulation etc. as I'm living aboard.

In in the original planning application in 2002 it was specified that a Puraflo Peat Filter System be installed. Can anyone tell me if this is the best system nowadays or what you recommend?

    Thank you.

Check with local site assessor as to the new cop 2009 (code of practice). What this requires.

A site assessor will advice. The council may recommend someone.

Get yourself good professional advice - try to meet the professional at the site - have your questions ready.

(I have heard that the peat filters can give trouble) (check with site assessor/planners if another system would meet the requirements) check with anua.ie.

In your case it never has been more important to get professional advice.

It's definitely worth getting in contact with the person who did your original site assessment and recommended the Puraflo.

We specify Puraflo modules quite a bit and as secondary/tertiary treatment options go we have found them to be less hassle than many of the others and more reliable in terms of treatment standards. They are, however, pretty the most expensive option available. It should also be noted that there is no such thing as a maintenance free effluent treatment system - this includes septic tanks, RBCs, activated sludge systems, aerated systems and peat filtration systems. Every one of them has to be monitored and regularly serviced.

If you want to change to a different system you should get a letter from the Council giving you the ok to do that - otherwise you will not be in compliance with your planning. I should also point out that it could be interpreted that if you didn't put in the effluent treatment system within the time period of your original planning you would need planning permission to put it in now. I am well aware that many many people have interpretted the rules to mean if you put up a blockwork structure on the site to wall plate level and do nothing else ... "you are ok" .. but it is worth noting that if you approach the council they may not take the same view!!!

Make sure whatever system goes in has CE Conformance Certification. Get this certificaiton in advance of installation - there's a lot of chancers out there.
