I had a sky subscription 2 years back and so have the dish set up and a sky+ hd box as well. we quit SKY and went with UPC for the past 18 months but still have the SKY+ box. the tv is hd, about 4 years old

pardon my complete ignorance but if i want to quit UPC and its charges, can I re-use the old SKY+ box pick up the basic Irish and UK digital channels free to air and not buy a combibox for freesat and saroview route - can i just re-plug it in and search for channels ? will i get any?

Or do I need to do something more ?

again, please excuse my complete lack of understanding in this area.

You will get some uk channels. Plug out the box, remove the viewing card and plug it back in. This will only work with older boxes afaik. You won't receive irish stations.

if the above doesn't work you can also buy in adverts or ebay a sky viewing card, that should give you all the Freesat from sky

OP just a quick note, the link above is for the Sky site just remember you dont need Sky for Freesat (just saying in case you think going through them is the way to go). You can use the Sky box but to be honest you would be best off buying a different box as navigating the Sky box for Freesat is a PITA even with the UK viewing card. There is plenty boxes out there that will do a good job for you. Freesat branded boxes are the most convenient as they automatically update and they usually have better layouts, Humax boxes being a prime example.

just put the free to air channels on your favourite list on the sky+ box, 7 day epg, auto updates, red button, just can't record, once it is not a hd box, if it is, freesat cards 5 euro on adverts.

Could anyone give me an exact run run down on what channels the Ma would be left with if she leaves Sky? I.e what is on 101, 102, 103 - any link would be great!

Have a look at the link that nava posted above. It shows all the FTA channels. Its from Sky's own webpage but its not a Sky subscription.

Remove the Sky card from the box to see what channels will be available.
