I am looking to upgrade to a better camera than D80, sticking with Nikon. I use the camera mainly for Sports (action) photos. I am looking at the D3300 and the D5000, but I am unsure. There are plenty second hand D5000s around and there are second hand ones to be got for around €180 and I was told by a guy that it is a great camera. The D3300 is around €500 new, which is the max of my budget. What would people recommend I do, or is there a better option?

The D5000 is not much of an upgrade. However you should be able to source D5100 or even D5200 within your budget for body only. Both of these autofocus only with AF-S lenses as these bodies like the D3300 do not have auto focus screw on mount. So factor in your existing lens inventory. If AF-S lenses then happy days they will auto focus with D5x00 and D3x00 series camera bodies.

Get a D7000, they are a great camera, forget the D90, that sensor generation is outdated by now. Alternatively you could look at a D5200/5300.

Thanks for the replies. How does the numbering system for Nikon work. Higher number after the D doesn't always necessarily mean a better camera?

    Just found this after some Googling: Nikons without AF motors: D40, D60, D3000, D3100, D3200, D3300, D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300.

no, kinda the other way around.

D*000 is the entry level range.
    D*00 is the prosumer range.
    D* is the pro range.

within a range, higher number is better. that does not apply *between* ranges. the D*0 numbering system has been dropped.

Thanks. I couldn't find an explanation like with search engines!

i used a d80 for years, and then i got a d7100, which is awesome. i wouldn't go for anything less than a d7100 personally. it'd be a downgrade in that case, from the d80.

I'm going to save up and probably upgrade (D50 at present) early next year. I see some newer models have 18-105mm kit lens. Would this effectively make a 50mm lens redundant, or not because it has some more F stops than typical kit stuff?

I see there's a 7200 on its way at some point.

I won't go for anything less than a D7000. The D7000 is all the camera you really need. Get body only and put the rest of the money on a nice 18-55 2.8 and a 70-200 and your set
