I am 3.8Kms from my exchange.

There is an existing cabinet in between ..... and I am 2.15 Kms from that.
My line is underground from that cab and I believe the connection to the exchange from the cab is also underground.

Of late my connection speed has improved quite a bit.
Recent tests show I am getting ~5Mb/s down and .4Mb/s upload speeds.
IIRC the line is set to sync at 6Mb/s at Eircom's end (not certain).

The information from Eircom seems to indicate that fibre will be brought out to the cabinet between the exchange and myself, and is slated to be fitted this year (sometime).

Given the above info, what are the guesstimates on what speed I might expect after the fibre cab is live?

    The same. Or slightly less.

VDSL will not benefit you at 2KM or more. Only thing you could see would be slightly increased crosstalk.

Does anybody know if there are any plans from Eircom's side to increase the maximum uplink speed from 20mbit/s to 30 or 40mbit/s for Efibre?

UPC was recently limited to 10mbit and have now increased it directly to 40mbit (I know, they're using cable, not VDSL so it might be easier from a technical aspect). There are several telcos internationally that are rolling out FTTC VDSL vectoring with a 40mbit up, 100mbit down combination in their respective countries... so it should be possible.

Attainables dont tend to reach 30Mb US even for 50-100m lines, very few people would see those profiles. Different countries are using different Annexs, this may account for the difference.

I got a helpful tech today with whom I discussed my line stats and hope for a little better speed from it.

About a year ago, although the pre-equal says 5Mb/s. I persuaded a tech to try syncing it at 6Mb/s. It worked and has remained like that since.

So today the nice tech upped the sync yet again, this time to 7Mb/s, and apparently all was OK from his end.
It is more than OK from my end also .... I am now d/loading at ~6Mb/s (up from 5Mb/s) and have not as yet noticed any drop outs or problems (about 4 hours in use).

Prior to today's 'upgrade' I had

    Speed: 6144/512 (kbp/s)
    Attenuation: 44/27 db

After speaking to the tech I have

    Speed: 7168/512
    Attenuation: 44/28

    The S/N is showing
    Downstream: 8.10
    Upstream: 21.00

Would someone like to venture an opinion on how high this line might go without giving problems?

    Thanks.

UPC have not increased their upload speeds to 40mbit.

It is 24mbit on the 240Mbit package

First thing you'd want to do is check that CRCs and FECs dont start clocking up too fast, but going on the above you're in a good position.

If the exchange is old kit then you'd move to 7.6Mb on DS and probably be ok. SNR would drop to 6.5-7 which is acceptable. If its a newer exchange then the next step is 8Mb. This might work, but might be that tiny bit too high.

Id try the current profile for 48hrs, and assuming the error rates are low then ask them to try it on the 8Mb profile.

Thank you for the feedback ..... yes I intended to check the error count tomorrow and watch it for a few days.

If all OK, I might try them again next week and see if they would try 8Mb/s.

Thanks for the confirmation that this just *might* work ;)

    Regards.
