Thinking of buying new? Am I crazy?

    Hi

I'm thinking of upgrading from my '05 Ford Focus Estate.

Looking to get a car I will keep for 10 years minimum.

Currently have two kids (two small ones), with hopefully more in the not too distant future :)

I'm thinking of an S-Max. Future proof with the possibility of seven seats. But like the big boot when only using the 5-seats. Although no spare tyre!

I want to get 2.0L (as I may tow a caravan in the future). I want titanium, for the cruise control and privacy glass.

I'm thinking of new, as I like the idea of having the 5-year warranty and no concern about history of the car etc.

Also from looking online the Titanium S-Max seems to hold it's value very well, so you don't gain much by buying second hand!! (about a 3-4k saving if you buy a year or two old seems very little!)

Importing from the UK does not seem to save as much as I would have thought for the hassle involved.

The only problem is new Titanium S-Max is nearly 40K!!!!!!

Am I right in my thinking?

If you will keep it 10 years then it makes sense.
The only way that will be worthwhile after 5 years is if you stay on top of maintenance.

There is a new revised model. Dunno if they're available yet.
Would a Galaxy be more future proof?

Ref values, look into that more. No way people are only paying €4k less than a new one for a 2 year old model. Maybe some dealers got stuck with some trade ins at the wrong money last year, but that's not your problem.

1 year old S-max from the UK:

Registered and taxed in Ireland for less than €29k which seems like a saving that's well worth it. €11k buys an awful lot of repairs!

There is a new S-Max being launched this year so there might be good deals to be had on existing models.

thats an awful lot of money for a private sale, for my liking, not saying its not worth it though.

bought a new Zetec smax last year, some good deals on them as they are replacing the model this year so the spec as been upped, zetec comes with cruise control and privacy glass is about €150 option, Zetec is 2.0 litre diesel, 17" alloys, sat-nav, electric folding mirrors, led day light running lights etc, much better value than the titanium, (approx. 6 k less !) only thing I miss that's on the titanium is auto lights and wipers, but I can live with that. Great car for space.

They have stopped making the current s max model apparently and are tooling up for the new one.
You will only be able to get a car the dealers have coming in to stock.
While the spec has improved I would still be looking to get a good discount as the newer model will instantly devalue the older model.
If you are going to keep it for years I suppose this wouldn't be an issue.

The current S Max is out since 2006 so you'd be mad to 40k on one & if you can wait for the new model that would be a better bet- but with delays Ford have had that might mean waiting till 2016. I dont think Ford dealers are doing any big discounts now as stock is low

if your looking to spend less, the Zafira Touring is nice looking machine with similar space to the S-Max. Seems to be a lot of pre reg deals- here is a 151 in Tipp for under 30k with the latest 1.6 136bhp engine

    This is interesting.

What would be the benefits of waiting for the new model?

Would there not be good deals available for new current models?
