    Hi People,

Had a long day... was working in town, driving between two jobs noticed that the clutch was making a grinding noise as I was releasing the clutch... On the drive home, had a LOT of trouble getting the car in to first gear.. I was getting worried about not being able to get the car in to first, and blocking up the M50, so I pulled the car in to a petrol station and waited a couple of hours for the traffic to clear.. With the home of a clear run home in one of the higher gears.

While I was looking over the problem, I left on the damned heater in the car and drained the battery, so I had to get a jump as well.. That has no relevance to the problem, but it really bugged the hell out of me  ..Got the car home and now I can hardly the car in first at all... However with the engine off, I can smoothly change between all the gears (so I presume the linkage is okay)..

Has anybody had anything similar? thanks,

    Golf MK4 02 1.4 petrol

how can you leave the heater on and drain the battery? something not right there.

It sounds to me as if you have a clutch problem if you can engage first with engine off but not with it running. (bit of an obvious answer). You need a mechanic look at it.

I know.. that sort of has me baffled.. I'd been checking around the engine, checking the oil and just looking for damage, and when I got back in to the car the starter didnt even turn... I thought first of all it was some sort of ignition prevention caused by the other problem... But I measured the battery and it was only 11.6v... It's a 44Ah battery, and I definitely was using anywhere near that for the hour that I was looking round the car..

Sounds like David Blaine vanished your clutch friction plate,
It will magically reappear in a kit at your local auto parts store.
    Bout 200 nicker.
