Garda Structure at station level

    Hi,

I'm curious as to the Garda structure in a station and was wondering if someone could help me out. who is 'in charge' at a station? Is it a sergeant, an inspector or superintendent?

And who would run investigations for detectives? Would there be a lead detective, as you often see on American TV shows? Do detectives work in pairs (again, often depicted in tv shows).

I hope this is in the right place. Any help would be appreciated!

The easiest way of explaining it is to start from the bottom up. Each garda reports to the unit sergeant who in turn reports to the Sergeant in Charge who in turn reports to an Inspector who in turns report to the Superintendent of the District.

Detectives run their own investigations but are overseen by the Detective sergeant.

Detectives may be in pairs or may be alone. It really depends on how many Detectives are in the station.

The sergeant is the main person you will be dealing with on a day to day basis. Inspectors or Superintendents / Chief superintendents will mainly be only seen at court sittings, inspections or at serious incidents / major events - or of course if you are complained about or something has gone wrong.

As regards detectives well there things are a little vague. The come in and out of the station mainly and wear snazzy suits but nobody really knows what they are at at any given time.
