Reversing around the Corner

Herself has had issues with this according to her instructor. Yesterday she got it right..numerous times..But the instructor wants her to take her foot completely off the clutch when reversing straight. Shes not happy doing this as naturally the car goes faster so she has less control and ends up out too far from the kerb

For the test is she ok to reverse around the corner and then use the clutch when straight? she has more control that way and shes does it properly

I would assume for the test they just want it done safely no?

I certainly didn't take my foot completely off the clutch when reversing the straight part of the reverse around the corner. You need to keep the car at a steady pace at all times. Clutch would have been at the biting point on the straight and then depends on whether tge road around the corner is flat/uphill/downhill.

Check out some you tube videos they can be pretty good.

I would have no problem using only clutch control, and not releasing the clutch fully when reversing around a corner. It sounds like your OH has the right idea.

Only need to use clutch through out the entire reverse around the corner. Unless of course as you turn theirs a hill. In the test most examiners dont expect any acceleration theyd prefer clutch all the way around.

I think you are overworrying this matter. The most important part reversing around the corner is to do the correct observations. There is no right or wrong way to control the clutch and accelerator - every car is different.

On a low powered vehicle you may not be able to release the clutch fully without some throttle and on a bigger engine you can just use the clutch without any throttle.

Focus on the surroundings and stop for any vehicles approaching from behind.

I kept my foot on the clutch the entire time - it lets you keep control of the speed, I personally wouldn't fully release it. But yeah speed isn't important for the reverse, it's all about observations (obviously you need to do it within a sensible amount of time otherwise you will get a mark for it on the test).

such as this one for example, which as an added bonus has some funny incidental moments from the pedestrians..

I kept my foot on the clutch the entire time during my reverse-around-the-corner and got no points in the test for it. It's a good way of maintaining smooth control: using the brake is too jerky.
