99 ford fiesta 5 door... does it have a belt or chain.. cant find anything on it.. and there is no tipex markings for a belt change because the car only has 60600 on the clock.

IIRC the 1.3 kent engine is chain and the 1.25 Zetec is a belt.

its a 1.3 I bought it from an older man who had it from new so I dont know if it was ever changed. how often are they to be changed?

chain is usually life of engine but can become loose or worn then replace.

Belts on older fords were 10 years or 100k miles whichever came 1st.

The fiesta you have is 1 of the most reliable cars out there and are only faulted mainly by rust under wheel arch mostly.

as stated a chain is usually for the life of the car unless broken or streached bejond use. If your looking to quieten down the engine the tappets are what you'd be best off adjusting first. Do bear in mind though that engine will never be as quiet as other engines, the basic design for that engine began in the fifties and little bits added here and there is what made it cost effective to continue production until early 2000's.

also Punnisher has a point. the rusting of the arches was the acillies heel for those cars. Ironically in their push to use reclaimed materials from scrapped cars etc they used an odd carpet/sponge type wheel liner that absorbed water and let it eat away at the metal. If they used plastic inner arches like most competetors this problem may never have been an issue. So while trying to recycle stuff they inadvertently consigned thousands of Fiestas and the like to the scrappers, i findnit ironic anyway.

thanks for the replies. the engines not loud and there is a tiny bit of rust on the back left.. so it will be a while yet before its destroyed with it

Keep it and drive it till it dies ( prob years b 4 it happens) great cheap car to keep you motoring if refinement isn't an issue for you

It's rust that kills these cars rather than the engine. Wings, sills, brake lines can rot on them and are NCT failures.
