Using bitumen paint on wood

I've brought a pallet box home from work , one that was used to ship roof tiles . It's in a1 condition so I've decided to make a box for garden to put childrens outside toys in . I've made a lid and put some roof felt on lid .

I was looking for a paint and from what I can see bitumen paint is the way to go. ( the felt is a very old roll which is good condition but hate colour) .

I see also it says you can use bitumen paint on wood . Has anyone used this paint on wood?

One other thing while we're on subject , it's quite heavy the lid , because it's quite a big box, I was thinking of putting some struts for safety on lid. Anyone got any idea of some good struts I could use.

So far it's not cost me a penny because I got some great pallets to make lid and fill in gaps around sides of pallet box to keep weather out . so I can afford to spend some money on decent struts plus any ideas for a lining on inside .
