What in the stuff the council spray on the road to melt the ice. I was stuck in traffic today when the council truck went past and loads of that stuff is stuck to the side of the car.

Well it do harm to the car? Was dark when I got back home.

possibly salt and grit, wash off tomorrow or if it rains may wash off itself.

Rock salt. It's sand and corse salt wash with water will get rid of it long term exposure on unprotected metal parts will cause corrosion.

They use much more of it in UK and a lot of UK cars suffer from rust on the underside

I was wondering how the car got dirty so quick

It's salt and yes it does do damage by speeding up the corrosion process. It won't do damage immediately but if left long enough it can cause rust, especially in vunrable place, eg underbody, arches etc. Hosing the car down with water will dissolve and clean the salt off. To get all the salt off your car the underbody and arches must also be hosed thoroughly as well.

+1 The small amount hitting the side of the OP is tiny compared to the amount on the underside of the car.

I though that they mixed some treacle with the salt.
