Buying car with vrt paid but no logbook

Evening all...... a guy I know brought a car in from the uk a number of years ago to restore ....he had a visit from customs at the time and ended up paying vrt on the car although it never went on the road..... he has now finished restoring it and is considering selling it ..... I fancy buying it but although the vrt was paid and a registration number was allocated he never followed through and had a logbook issued as he says he could only get the logbook when he went to tax it...... since he wasn't going to tax it... it never got a logbook issued.....

How might I buy this and get a logbook without ending up with a large lump of back tax ???

Get him to try and tax it for 3 months and see if they talk about arrears. I get the feeling there won't be any.

Tell him to tax it for 3 months and when the log book arrives, you an do the transfer of ownership on the VLC then. Maybe have a price agreed for the car before hand including the price of 3 months tax.

The logbook does not arrive on imported cars until they are taxed for the first time.

Will he get caught for back tax between the time he vrt'd it and now ? Think it was vrt'd in 2008

He shouldn't. But I'd want that sorted before I bought it too. Has it been declared off the road? Just to be clear, he bought a UK car, paid the VRT and never taxed it?

It's simple and I have done similar as I sold a uk 06 Focus that I paid the vrt and nct but didn't tax it so no VRC as you only get it when it's first taxed.

The seller just sends a nice typed letter to Shandon detailing that it was sold to Mr B of B address with the reg/chassis number and most importantly it's signed by the seller.

Buyer gets the tax renewal form in the post to the B address, then taxes it and new VRC will arrive at Mr B address

    Edit,

I also forgot. No harm in checking motortax.ie to see what the dates are for arrears as the first Pin number is the last 6 digits of the chassis number
