I know this post sounds very stupid but I'm just really paranoid about this as I'm doing my junior cert in June and my mocks in two and a half weeks. I've seen online that it'll effect my memory but I dunno if that's only if your boxing years. I've training 3 times a week and I spar usually 2 times out of the 3 or maybe spar every session. It's not like I get the head punched off me every night so I suppose that's alright and I wear a head guard everytime I spar. I wish someone could just tell me if it did effect me or not because I don't want to waste my time studying then it's gonna go eventually because I do boxing so if it does I'll leave and if it doesn't I'll stay, I really hope it doesn't because I've fell in love with the sport and I'm doing well in school but I'd have to pick school over it. Please reply soon.

There are lots of scare stories about virtually everything you'll ever do in life. If you listened to them all you'd never get in a car again, never walk home late at night, never go anywhere alone, etc. etc.

There is no doubt there is an element of risk when boxing, just as there is playing rugby, hurling, etc. and it would be dishonest of me to pretend it doesn't exist, but unless you plan on turning professional and having a long career, the risk isn't any worse than the aforementioned sports (and possibly many others).

You could bear in mind that the greatest chess player of all time, Russian Gary Kasparov always boxed and played tennis when in 'training' for a big chess match. It certainly didn't do him any harm.

If you enjoy boxing, keep it up, you'll spend long enough doing stuff you don't like.

Thanks, but do u say that I would have any effect on me? Like ill forgot stuff that I study? To be honest I don't think it will because I'd say you'd have to be doing it without head guards and professionally. I never come out of sparring with headaches or anything so I'd say I should be ok?

Honestly, I don't think it will, but I don't know your physical condition, nor am I a neurologist. I boxed for a good few years, mainly in my teenage years and I took a lot of punches and I don't think it had any effect on me. But I'm not you.

You're probably too young to realise yet that there will always be cowards/worriers/pessimists/miserable b*stards who latch onto every half-truth and rumour about everything and live their lives accordingly ie. miserably and constantly in self-induced fear. Don't let them get the better of you. Do what you enjoy doing and f*ck the begrudgers!

Amateur boxing should no harm, controlled sparring should be fine. Don't worry too much about your jc. If anything boxing will help you relax after a hard day studying

The exercise in general is good for the brain and would more than help counter any negative effects. Seeing as it is sort of on subject then taking up chess alongside it is a great idea.

Yea I'm just going to stick with it because at the end of the day we all end up in the same place! For some stupid reason I was just paranoid about if I keep doing it it might effect me going to collage beside I won't remember what I studied and all that. I'll be fine sure I'm sparring people my own height and slightly below my height and I don't think they'd have the strength to damage my brain, for now anyways haha :)

Yea I reckon I'll be fine. Since I box people the same age as me and height etc (I'm quite small) don't think it would cause much damage to my brain.

Ask in your club about the Christle brothers (Mel, Joe and Terry). As far as I remember, they all boxed at a high amateur standard and one of them went on to be a surgeon, the others are barristers. Boxing didn't bother them in the slightest.

I haven't been online for the last few days.

My source is my memory. You know that thing that the internet dweebs don't allow us to use. Just because you can't Google it doesn't mean it didn't happen. However, with someone as well known as Kasparov, I expected to be able to find it.

I read it back in the 80's when Kasparov was in his prime. I honestly don't know where, but it was most likely a newspaper article on Kasparov and his preparation techniques. I know for certain tennis and boxing were quoted as being two of the activites he used when in 'training' for a big chess match.

The internet documents a lot, but not everything. That is why youtube can be so useful. Learn a lot from comments and commentary that wouldn't be written down and available online.

I'm not doubting it's true, was just hoping to read about it.
