So after doing 17 interviews in the space of 10 months..I get offered 2 jobs..1 of which I signed a contract for early this month..I then got offered a job I was more interested in and had a better feeling about..but I am still waiting for a contract..due this week. I am due to start the job I signed for in Feb..my question is can I get out of the first contract? I am so panicked and freaked out they will sue me or something as they are a large organisation... I would love some advice so.I can sleep better .

    thanks!!!

  • They won't sue you, and if you're in probation I would bet you there's a line in your contract that states either party can terminate the employment in that period.

If you really prefer the 2nd job then take that job.

Yes you can and you've nothing (and I mean nothing) to worry about - use this opportunity to get more money for yourself.

Might be difficult to ever get work with the first company again in the future, that's about the only consequence I can think of.

Thanks for the responses...I'm not even sure of how I can tell them.. I know it will have to be a phonecall but I feel so guilty over it especially as they offered me a role :-(

Do I need to go into detail?

Depends on the story the OP tells...

PS OP: Don't feel guilty at all. They're offering you money to do a job for them, that's why they're offering you a job. Don't feel guilty.

Keep it short and sweet ...

    Dear X

I would like to thank you for the wonderful opportunity to work in the role of ____. Unfortunately I must inform you that due to circumstances outside my control, I will be unable to take up that position. Once again I would like to express my appreciation to your company for the offer of the position and wish you and your company all the best for the future,

    Yours sincerely

    Y

Edit: they may follow up your letter with a phone call to check they havn't blotted their copybook. Be prepared.
