hi folks, thinking of getting a dereelight x searcher for use as a hand held light for lamping a few bunnies with my dog, done some research on these, and with a tight long range beam, seems to be what im after, anyhow, seems there are a lot of opinions of what battery/charger to use,so is there anyone using said light,or an nm800,(as they use the same type battery, 18650 rechargeable),if so what brand battery/charger are you using,?thanks all.

When I ordered my NM800 IR I got the extension tube for 2 batteries and the charger as a package

    From the website

    Package 2=XSearcher + 2x18650 + charger--$146.

Try www.dx.com for both 18650 PROTECTED batteries and a good charger.

Just had a look at that site - it has everything you need but if you're buying from it make sure to go for the Panasonics, LG's or Sanyo's. They're a bit more expensive than the other brands you'll see but that's because all of the others are second life laptop batteries for the most part, and just plain old poor quality batteries so the few extra quid is well worth it.

WRT the protection - I understand that people get nervous about these cells but if you're going to be using them in a high power application then you really are better off without it. The typical 18650 chemistries run down to 2.85V terminal so the chance of overdischarge in an LED lamp such as the one you're looking at is near zero on account of the LED driver chip that will be running the show (this is the reason for the distinction in spec between the MT-S and MT-M models - has to do with cell count so that approriate voltage regulation is maintained) - everything else then is managed by the charger and any of the generic chargers will do the job just fine. ;)

The red batteries that come with the nm are brutal.

If you have an old laptop take out the battery pack. Crack it open and you have 8-12 very good batteries, interchangeable in most lamps. Buy the double charger from dx.com then and you'll be sorted.

I'm advising the unprotected batteries over the protected versions as the latter can have their max current significantly limited by the protection circuits - meaning that in high power applications you don't get the best out of either the battery or the device that it's powering. So in the case of your proposed lamp, I'd say go with the unprotected versions yes.

Furthermore, the main reason for the protection on batteries is for preventing overcharging/overdischarging of the cell - this isn't a problem in your application because the LED driver circuit will have an undervoltage cutout so there's no risk of overdischarge, and as you're using the correct charger, there's no risk of overcharge. So the protection simply isn't needed.

As to the brand names, yes, definitely go with the known brands - it makes a BIG difference in the performance of the cell. I've load testing various offerings from Panasonic, LG, Sanyo and Sony, as well as the hongfire, surefire and other el-cheapo offerings and the difference is astonishing!

Sony VTC4's take the crown as of the last time I did any serious testing but none of the above branded names will let you down. ;)
