What to do during gap year

Im sitting my Leaving Cert in June and hope to get a place on an engineering course in NUIG. However I feel I'm too young to go to college because I'm only turning 17 at the end of February, and I don't feel like I'm ready in general to live independently and away from home! My plan is to defer my place on the course as I'm fairly sure I'll get the points for it anyway. I've been told to apply for a PLC for a year but they don't really interest me as I'm very academic and there aren't many PLC courses in science or engineering that would be worth doing. I hope to get a job for the year and start saving money but I want to do a course of some sort so I don't fall out of a study routine and so I'm not completely lost when I return to studies next year.
Any advice or does anyone know any good courses? I live in the midlands so obviously not anything in the likes of Kerry or Donegal!

Before Transition Year came in, a great number of people were the age you will be going to college. It made no great difference to us then.

    Why not learn another language?

It's a good idea not to take a PLC place from someone who needs it and does consider it worth doing.

If you are in the midlands you could check out the evening classes in AIT.

    .

That's not very helpful or sympathetic. Everyone is different.
