Accessing Eircom's Zyxel f1000 USB file share? (Windows and/or Linux)

On the Zyxel f1000's WebUI >> Network Settings >> USB Service >> I have file sharing enabled with the default hostname Gateway, and I also have the media service enabled. The label set for the drive when I originally formatted it to FAT32 is Media.

Although I can connect to it using Filezilla on SFTP port 21, using the username admin and the password I set on the WebUI, and browse the connected drive's contents, I have not been able to make it display as a network drive in Windows 8.1 or Ubuntu 14.04. My aim is to easily transfer files to and from the drive from both of these operating systems and later our rooted Samsung TV and Android and IOS tablets.

I welcome any Linux users who know how to do this but I expect most of you reading this to be using Windows and I most welcome advice from you also!

    Windows 8.1:

In Explorer, which shows in 8.1 as 'This PC' I have selected Network from the bottom of the left hand menu. Here only the Windows PC's hostname is visible under Computer on the right hand side, nothing else. I right clicked Network on the left hand side an selected properties, then Homegroup from the bottom left, then create a homegroup. I recorded the generated password and then selected allow all deices on this network to play my shared content. This lead nowhere as I still cannot see anything else under network.

I then right clicked network and selected map network drive. I tried the likes of \\192.168.1.254\, \\192.168.1.254\Media\, \\192.168.1.254\mnt\usb1_1, and even \\192.168.1.254\usbkey, although I am not using one, as someone mentioned previously that worked but

    Ubuntu 14.04

From the 'Files' browser I selected connect to a network on the left hand side and tried things like sftp://192.168.1.254, admin@sftp://192.168.1.254, sftp://admin@192.168.1.254. I also tried those with \mnt and \mnt\usb1_1 appended to the url.

    Please advise.

I would say don't bother, any time I asked the Eircom modem to do anything more than basic routing it kept falling over.

You can't beat a dedicated NAS device. Even the cheaper devices from the main HDD manufactures should function alot better than using your Broadband modem.

I would just stay away from any of the "Cloud" features they push. Both a security risk and yet another thing to make working behind a NAT/PAT more complicated.

Nothing on those USB ports worked for me either. I'm thinking of getting it unlocked which will allow it to be updated to the latest firmware. There's a thread on here about it. Search adverts and he'll unlock it for €20 plus postage.

I confirm the F1000 will work fine as an ftp/media server with recent Zyxel firmware. You can unlock the F1000 yourself, I did. Gives a feeling of achievement.

I have been using the USB service after unbranding my zyxel f1000 but every day we have to turn the router on and off to restore NAS functionality. It's like three port or the USB powered 500GB Western Digital drive attached to it goes asleep.

Have any of you encountered this?

    Gonna have problems.

Get a device built for the purpose
