    Hello,

What would be the most convenient way to travel to Cork from Dublin Airport and back? I'll be staying in a hotel in Cork so convenience is key. Any idea how much the fare would cost (bus, train, etc)?

    Thanks in advance.

There's a direct bus it costs about 15 each way and leaves just outside arrivals

    Aircoach
Most regular including very early and late departures.
Online Fares from €27 return (strongly advise booking online)
    Stops at St Patrick's Quay
    http://www.aircoach.ie/timetables/route-704-x-cork-dublin-city-dublin-airport-express

    GoBe
6 times each day, no very early or very late departures
Book Online for best prices, discount for students
Adult Online Fares from €28, Students €24.
    Stops at Main Bus Station
    http://www.gobe.ie/

Don't bother with Bus Eireann, it takes ages and isn't direct.

So basically if you're a student, go with GoBE if the times suit if not go with Aircoach.

Aircoach. I'd advise book an hour earlier than you need to go just to be safe. they fill reserved seats first but sometimes you have to wait for next one
Once on board best way to get to Dublin airport :-)

Thank you very much for the quick replies.

The bus trip from Dublin Airport to Cork seems fine, however on the way back I'm pressed for time since the return flight from Dublin Airport departs at just past noon (12:45pm). Earliest GoBe bus is from 8:30am and arrives at Dublin Airport at 11:45am (so 1 hour should be enough time to check in and board the flight). I guess I'll have to use Aircoach's services. Hopefully they won't have too many delays.

Do you mean that one hour will be enough time, or that it won't be enough time, so you are getting the Aircoach instead?

I don't think that one hour is enough, especially if you have to queue to check in and/or drop off a bag.

If you want to get the train, there is a 6am and a 7am departure from Cork. They arrive at Dublin Heuston at 8.30 & 9.30am. (Those trains run Mon to Sat, the Sunday train would probably be too late for you.) You then get the 747 Airlink bus from Heuston Station to the airport. The Airlink bus runs every 15/20 minutes, so you won't have to worry about bus timetables. It gets to the airport in about 30 minutes.

^Sorry, I meant to edit my post but for some reason it wouldn't let me.

What I meant to type was; 1 hour (approximately) might/might not be enough time and instead of risking it, I'll most likely end up going with Aircoach since they have buses operating earlier than 8:30am.

Right you are. Wise decision. One hour would probably not be enough time.

Now that you've mentioned the train option, it sounds tempting as well. Would it be faster than the bus do you think? I looked at the Irish Rail journey planner and the 7am Cork-Dublin Heuston train is direct with no changes and the travel time of 2 and a half hours seems quick compared to the express bus routes or am I wrong?

What days/dates were you expecting to travel? There are extra services on Fridays and Sundays on the buses and reduced services at weekends on the train.

also if fares are a consideration the open return fare on the train at the booking office is €85.30 plus €10 for the return airlink bus. Also note that the airlink bus can take as long as an hour to get to the airport from O'Connell street. Lower fares are available online if booked in advance but may be subject to terms and conditions.

Aircoach walk up fare is €30 return and booked online it is between €24 and €30

You can then get a taxi or bus to DA.

You have to allow for the time it takes to get from Heuston to Dublin Airport, and at 9.30am on a weekday that's going to be up to an hour at least - buses leave every 15 minutes and go all around the houses picking up passengers.

I'd be doing Aircoach all the way direct.

Good points regarding the traffic and wait times.

I think Aircoach to and from Dublin Airport is what I'll do. Are they generally on time would you say?

The train booked online will cost €60-€70 return depending on which times you book on Thursday morning(may involve a change at Mallow), add on the 747 fare of €10 return and it works out at about €80 for a 4hour journey.

the bus does the journey non stop between Cork and Dublin City centre and on then to the Airport via the Port Tunnel in 3hours 20-30minutes for €30 return or slightly less on Aircoach and €28(online)/€30(on board) for GoBé

You've all been very helpful and informative. I appreciate every bit. Thank you.

I think tomorrow I'll book the Aircoach express tickets online and call it a day. The convenience of having the bus pick you up and drop you off at the airport is great, at least for me.

Just to confirm, the Aircoach and GoBe pickup/drop off points are within walking distance to the Arrivals and Departures terminals at Dublin Airport, right?

Can't answer for GoBe, but Aircoach is right outside the door.

I think GoBe is about a five minute walk in the bus parking area

Of course its quicker than a bus. It's a train. They can go a lot faster than buses. The two and half hour journey time is correct. If that is what the time table says it is, that is what it is. Unless bad weather/derailment/points failure etc etc occur, the trains generally arrive and depart per the timetable.

Houses, what houses? The Airlink bus goes from Heuston Station to Busaras and then on to the airport, via the Port Tunnel. It doesn't go anywhere near any houses & the journey doesn't take an hour. Is it possible that you are mixing it up with another bus?

All around the houses is a turn of phrase. The 747 does not go directly to Busaras and then to Dublin Airport, there are 12 stops between Heuston and the airport, all around the city centre. At just after rush hour this is liable to take at least an hour. Of course it may be quicker on a good day, but I wouldn't be relying on it if a flight depended on it.

9:30 is past rush hour. That said the timetable does say an hour ( 30 minutes to get to and leave busaras!)

2hours 30minutes rising to 2hours 50minutes to Heuston station then walk out to the Luas stop and wait for the 747 which can take up to an hour to get to the airport from O'Connell St at peak times.

From 15:00hrs - 19:00hrs it can take up to 55 minutes to travel from O’Connell St. to Dublin Airport.
Please allow sufficient time to catch your flight.
Please note luggage must not be left in the aisles due to safety reasons. - See more at: http://www.dublinbus.ie/en/Your-Journey1/Timetables/All-Timetables/7471/#sthash.RVUIgUDs.dpuf

Rush hour is very moveable feast in Dublin city centre.

A lot of public sector aren't required to be in before 10am, so I would say that's probably when rush hour ends.

The OP isn't going to the airport from O'Connell St, they are going from Heuston station.

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators Posts: 11,744 Mod ✭✭✭✭devnull

Since they changed the route and merged the 747 and 748 and added some extra stops in it now is not as near as direct as it used to be and Dublin Bus themselves estimate 60 minutes.

    http://dublinbus.ie/en/Your-Journey1/Timetables/All-Timetables/7471/

    The bus serves O'Connell Street.

The bus goes to O'Connell St (20 mins), then Busaras (10), then DA (30).

If money were no object I would take that train ( or an hour later) and a taxi.
