    Hi,
My boyfriend and I just got our WHVs accepted and have decided that we want to start off in Wellington, so we want to try book our flights as soon as possible.

I am looking for suggestions for the best way to fly to Wellington; best route, best airlines, websites to avoid etc.

Right now the best we can find is Dublin to Dubai, then to Sydney and finally to Wellington. This is with ebookers.ie

    Thanks in advance!

I'm originally from Wellington myself, and went back there recently. For the last two flights, we've flown Dublin-Abu Dhabi-Singapore-Brisbane-Wellington (stopover that time) and Dublin-Abu Dhabi-Sydney-Wellington (this time with a 3 month old!). This was with Etihad. They are grand for just two travelling without a baby. We booked them through Australian holidays.

Never flown emirates myself, but hear they are very good. There is no way around getting a minimum of 3 flights to Wellington. The only other 3 flight way that I can think of is Dublin-San Francisco-Auckland-Wellington

I find it easier flying directly into Wellington international, seem to get out quicker there.

Hope you have a great working holiday in Aotearoa, you never know, you may love it so much you end up staying.

emirates is excellent. flew with them to australia twice. don't know if they fly from dublin though.
I reckon dublin-dubai, then dubai-sydney/melbourne (emirates) with a connecting flight to wellington.

Emirates do fly from Dublin twice daily (Lunchtime/Evening), just came back with them recently through Dubai-Melbourne. Don't like the Boeing 777's but the A380's are the business, feels more roomy.

Flew Etihad as well who were quite good. Etihad usually fly you through Dublin-Abu Dhabi-Sydney-Wgtn. Can't wait for their A380's and 787's to arrive.

Sadly Wellington's airport is tiny so can only take 737s, you're limited to coming via Auckland/Christchurch domestically, or Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane internationally. I've always tried to stop over on my way down so usually do a night in Asia or Dubai.

Personally I like Qantas as I have lots of points and status with them through my work, but Emirates are also great if you don't mind the very long leg between Dubai and Sydney/Melbourne and the slightly less seat width. Depending on your ticket they may put you up in Dubai during your stopover for free including food if you structure it for 12 hours in between flights.

The Etihad route goes via Abu Dhabi and then for a fuel stop in Singapore which is looooong but again dooable. Found their A330 to be not as nice as Qantas or Emirates A380s.

Singapore and Air NZ codeshare to Singapore which is a lovely stopover. Lufthansa also can offer cheap deals in partnership with Air NZ/Singapore.

Finally another option that I did a few times is with Korean, they will put you in the Hyatt in Seoul as part of your ticket, very nice stopoever! If you like Asian food and great legroom, but crap entertainment :)

Welly's airport is small but it's the most exciting to land in :D

Certainly when its windy, I've done it a few times in a Cessna, great place to learn to fly :)

But imo Queenstown wins in terms of excitement and view!

I would advise, depending on finances to try and see a bit of the country before you settle into Wellington for work. Chances are you wont make enough money to do it afterwards if you are doing barwork etc. and at least that way you have a better feel for places if you decide to move somewhere else after Welly if you fancy a change.

The one time I flew in there, the pilot warned people not to freak out due to the proximity of the mountains! Was something else. Think that was with jetstar
