Can't predict it and continually get in a tizzy about it. Other countries can call it to a tee... But the hysteria we get into about a little wind or snow is incredible. The recent non storm was a perfect example of it all round, there was people writing wills and building bunkers in the days up to it.

Other countries can feed off the information we and UK provide.

We get to feed off.... the Atlantic. That's not very forthcoming with facts and figures, unfortunately.

So forecasting for Ireland can be a bit of a guessing game sometimes.

I don't think it's necesasrily an Irish thing (just like all the other threads that get started saying why do the Irish do xyz). My father in law is South African and is obsessed with the weather. It's pretty much the only thing he can have a conversation with people about and gets himself in a tizzy at even the tiniest bit of rain or wind.

We get regular weather updates from South Africa from him. They are fascinating, as you can imagine :pac:

On this point you are right and sometimes it reaches cringe-worthy levels.

On the wider topic it isn't just the Irish that angle in the weather to daily conversation. Having lived in a few countries now, it's just the same in all of them. It's just basic small talk.

    We can a bit.

Oh you're one of those people. Ireland sucks and everywhere else is better? Dear oh dear.

It's because we've normally got very temperate boring weather so some people (not everyone) enjoy talking about it and get a bit of a buzz when we get storms and snow etc. I enjoy a good storm myself.
there was people writing wills and building bunkers in the days up to it

    hyper........ bole

It seems what IS an Irish thing is going on about how "Only the Irish" do [insert silly thing here].

The way people talked about the freezes of 2009 and 2010 as "a bit of snow" was pathetic too. It was very severe weather for Ireland.
"Lol the whole country shuts down we're so useless" bla bla. Well we're hardly going to have the infrastructure to deal with snow that severe (for here) when the last time there was such a severe episode of it before late 2009 was late 1981.

I suppose it's rare enough for us to get such extremes here.

Try getting an accurate forecast for the west of France- abysmal to say the least.
Most of continental Europe experiences a Continental climate , which a child of 6 could predict accurately. We have to cobtnd with constantly changing Atlantic weather fronts.

At that time (2010) in work, they decided to buy a snow plough attachment for ridiculous money. It hasn't been used yet.

As you say, because it's so infrequent here, we don't have the infrastructure in place. It'd be a false economy to cover every eventuality.
